About

This page is all about getting people new to chemistry up and going, written pretty much as I do stuff. If anyone with more experience sees something I've missed, please add it in as a note.

Starters

What do you need?

  • One Chemistry Lab, upgraded to Level 2, and fitted with a full set of glassware. High quality is not essential, but tuning is useful.
  • A full 'set' of spirits. These can be traded for, or if you wish to create them yourself, you will need an alembic and some high tannin wines, as well as some high sugar wines. You'll also need charcoal to fuel the alembic. I'll cover distillation later on.
  • Some materials to make extracts from. These are things like herbs, resins, powdered gems etc.

What does tuning do?

Tuning reduces the number of Essential Extracts required to make an Essential Mixture by 1 for each level. To be able to tune a lab, the mean average (add up all the qualities of the glassware in your lab, then divide by 5) must be over a certain level (Level 3 requires <=8000q mean average, others relatively unknown), and be divisible by 10 to get lvl 1 tuning, by 100 to get lvl 2 tuning, and by 1000 to get lvl 3 tuning. It also gives more powdered gem per *small* gem.

How do I start?

The first thing to do is pick a type of compound, Geb, Maat, Set, Osiris, Thoth or Ra. Extracts of Geb require two attributes at 2 or better, Maat requires two at 3 or better, Set requires three at 3 or better, Osiris requires two at 4 or better, Thoth requires three at 4 or better, and Ra requires two at 5 or better.

To understand this, you have to look at what an Essential Extract is. Each Essential Extract has 8 stats, and each stat can be -3 to +3. So if you wanted to create a Geb's extract, you would need two stats to have +/-2, depending on what your chem lab requested. You can see what the lab needs to create the Extract by going clicking on your lab and going to Manufacture->Extracts and picking the type you want to make.

Let's take an example. Let's say we want to make a Set's compound extract to use in Strong Potash Oil. We go to the lab and find it is asking for Astringent (---) Spicy (---) Toxic(---). Using the Extracts Page kindly compiled by Nchanter and Traak, we can find 5 Essential Extracts that make up what we need. Why 5? Because each Extract requires you to use 5 different Essential Extracts.

To work out the final stats that a mixture of 5 Essential Extracts would give, simple add up all the stats. SO let's give it a go.

We can find by looking down the table that Thyme would be a good one, it's got -3As -2Sp 0To. Umbrella Palm is also a nice common material to use, giving -1As -3Sp. So that's our As and Sp taken care of. So now for To(---), remembering we've used up 2 of 5 required slots. Pratyeka resin is a good bet, giving -1To, but all others that are-To but 0As 0Sp are rather hard. Luckily, we have -4As -5Sp -1To at this point, so we can afford to loose 1As 2Sp. Let's see what that opens up. We can look again, and see that Arconis would give us the stats we want, but we then have to find something that wont change the values we have, since we need to have a total of 5 Essential Extracts. A quick search reveals that Bramble Hedge or Chicory would fill the need, you can pick whichever you want. I'm going to go with Bramble Hedge. So, in this case, our final result should be 3Ar/-5As/6Bi/-2Sa/-2So/-3Sp/5Sw/-3To.
