Charter (Draft 1)

Definitions

For the purposes of this document:

  • "Guild" shall refer to the Lower Egypt Advanced Research Network
  • "The Region" shall refer to Old Egypt and any nearby low-population regions that wish to involve themselves.
  • "Member" shall refer to anyone in the Lower Egypt Advanced Research Network, regardless of rank

Purpose

The Guild is formed for two primary purposes:

  • Completing research at the seven universities in Old Egypt to benefit The Region
  • Constructing public works in Old Egypt to benefit The Region

There are also some secondary purposes the Guild serves:

  • Coordination and assistance in the The Region's interests
  • Testing and research of mysteries such as seeds
  • General socialization

While the secondary purposes are beneficial and desirable, if on any subject they conflict with the primary purposes the primary purposes shall take precedence.

Membership

Membership is open to any person making their primary residence in The Region. This includes Old Egypt as well as anyone with a primary residence in nearby low-population regions (including Cat's Claw Ridge, Desert of Nomads, and Valley of Kings) if they are interested in participating in research donations. Others may join if sponsored by a current Member.

New Members are requested to donate to the Guild boards and bricks equivalent to one twentieth (1/20) the cost of a 20-member guildhall expansion at the time of their application. This fee may be waived in exchange for goods or services deemed equivalent by the Guild.

If a current Member does not log in for 30 days or longer, they may be removed from the Guild if space requires. If they later return, they may request reinstatement without paying another fee.

All current Members at the time the charter is ratified shall be exempt from the donation requirement, as they have assisted in building up the Guild and have likely already contributed that much or more.

Expectations

Everyone is expected to help at whatever pace is best for them. There is no minimum commitment requirement. However, certain standards of behavior are expected:

  • Do not use obscene language in the Guild chat, or in main chat while at a Guild-sponsored event. This is somewhat subjective, but if it would be unacceptable on television during prime time then it is unacceptable in this setting.
  • Do not take Guild resources for personal use unless it is specifically permitted by the Guild. If you are not sure if something will be acceptable, ask!
  • If you make a mistake, just apologize and we will do what we can. For example, if you accidentally "take all" when there's a million ore in a mine, someone might be able to help keep at least some of it from going to waste.

Guild Equipment

Facilities built by the Guild should be available for public use unless there is a good case-by-case reason for it not to be. Examples of a good reason:

  • Containers with any guild goods, unless it is intended to be free for all to take (such as papyrus seeds or improved flax seeds).
  • Facilities in constant or near-constant use. A furnace with a multi-day runtime can benefit from restricted access so it has a chance to run long enough without being disturbed.

Compounds built by the Guild will have restricted access simply so that the most efficient use possible can be made of their space, allowing the Guild to build the most facilities at the lowest cost. Although the compound itself is restricted, all facilities within it should be as public as possible.

Decision Making

Simple decisions can be made by consensus of online Members. This covers most things that do not involve significant expense and most short-term decisions.

A board shall be selected by the membership to propose long-term decisions such as expensive construction projects and research targets. Unless it is an emergency, any board decision should be discussed with the Members before executing it. If there is consensus the decision will go forward, and if not it should be discussed within the Guild to find why people disagree. If a modified decision does not gain consensus either, it will be brought to a general vote among all Members.
