Notes
# Acetic Acid was seen on an 8.7k glass, but it could be a Primary rather than Secondary taste. Only Chemicals were on the lower glasses.
##I also saw only chemicals (5773 glass) and acetic acid(6455 and 9044 glasses), but its possible acetic acid is the middle flavour and we're missing the top - Spicy
## Updated: After further tasting I must have had an error in my tasting notes. It is clear now that sharp sulfur is a tier 3 as shown. This also matches the T3 chart so it makes more sense. (From my tests, I believe Sharp Sulfur is the middle flavor, but it could be Chemicals->Acetic Acid->Sharp Sulfur) - Omari
# The tier 2 flavors didn't show up on these on my table, so pulled them from the T3 wiki-Tedra
# Tar is the top level flavour I saw on a 9k glass, petroleum is the middle flavour that I saw on 5.5k glass - Spicy
# Geraniums seen in wine at 3 vints old, but not tested at 2 vints - Spicy
# This was seen in T3 as vintage 1, can anyone confirm this is true for T4? I have a pungency flavour detected at vintage 3 and suspect this might be it. - Linalia
# I now have two vineyards that have a "Spicyness" flavor, but do not resolve to the Tier 3 flavor. I am growing more grapes with a higher quality and covering more of the area to track down the exact flavor - Telanoc

Reading The Flavor Chart
Vintage indicates how old the wine was when the flavor first appeared in the wine.
* If a wine contains flavors that have not developed at the wine's current vintage age, those flavors will not be detectable when the wine is tasted.
* If no flavors are detectable, a wine will report as Thin and not give tasting checks for quality.
* As the wine ages and flavors come in, the wine will stop being Thin.

Note: It is the age on the Secondary Taste that brings the flavor in, not the Taste Category or Primary Taste.

For example:
* Bell Pepper (0) and Green Beans (1) are both Vegetable/Freshness flavors.
* If a wine only has the Green Beans flavor in it, it will report as Thin until it is 1 vintage old (not giving the Vegetable or Freshness flavors).
* Bell Pepper, on the other hand, will show Vegetable, Freshness, and Bell Pepper flavors on different glasses starting at 0 vintages old.

- Linalia

How to Catch A Frog
I have been using this method since Tale 2, and having taught to a few people, and been told a few times I should post it to the wiki, I am finally doing so. This is method to catch frogs as employed by me and I have found it very simple and straightforward, almost guaranteed to catch your little froggie first time through, your mileage may vary.

What you need
# The catching of frogs depends on the ability to distinguish between the strength of the left and right channels of the audio output. Many people use either decent stereo speakers or headphones, though I personally prefer headphones to reduce background noise. If you have neither of those, or are hearing impaired there is still hope. When safari first came out in Tale 2, I did not have either good speakers or headphones, someone clued me into the idea of getting a “sound visualizer”, a program the visually displayed the audio channels on the screen.

What you need to know
# The direction of a sound is based on which way the CAMERA is facing, not your avatar. You can see this by standing where you can hear apiaries, swing your camera around without moving your avatar, the sound will switch from side to side
# The apparently volume of sounds in the game is dependent on distance from the source. You will see this in many things, such as cicada cages. Far away they are a barely audible noise, up close they can rattle the windows.
# Frogs (and cicadas for that matter) can be heard at most sixty (60) coordinates away.
# There can be more than one frog within audible range of a given spot. This does make it more challenging because you will hear him from one direction then another. The easiest way to tell if you have two frogs is by sound level intensity, remember sound level is based on distance, so if one direction sounds louder than the other, you probably have more than one frog working. While it is more challenging and can take more “gut and feel” the good news is you have your next frog to find already located.
# Many people will tell you about the “shadow that used to be there”, don't worry about not being able to see it anymore. In two tellings, catching more frogs than I care to count, I have seen the shadow very few times. So long as you can get the sound out in some manner you can tell left from right channels, you don't need the shadow one bit.

Where to look
# First you need to find a frog before you can catch them. Frogs can appear next to any body of water in Egypt, they are very common. But there is a catch, you want to find a frog that is easier to catch. You can do this by changing where you look, specifically spend your time looking on the sea shore, such as the Red Sea coast or the Mediterranean coast. The reason for this is simple, if you find a frog near a body of water that you can see the other shore, he could be on the side you start or he could be on the other side. By removing one of the shores you remove this condition.

What to do
Now that you have found your frog, you want to catch him.

# STOP running
# Swing you camera so that it is looking out over the water perpendicular to the plane of the shoreline.
# Listen for the frog, note down which side you hear him on, right or left
# Swing you camera around 180 degrees so that it is looking in over the land, still perpendicular to the plane of the shoreline
# Listen again, when you hear the frog, it should have switched sides.
## The swinging the camera bit around isn't strictly needed, but I find it is helpful in making sure my first bearing is correct.
# Mark this spot. I like to drop 1 mud -OR- 1 sand to mark the spot. This is simply because where you are hunting frogs mud and sand are readily available. The trick here is to uses one when you hear him on the left, the other when you hear him on the right. For example Mud is "left", and Sand is "right". It doesn't matter which one you use on which side, so long as you always use the same one when you hear the frog in that direction
# Run down the shore a ways, remembering that you can only hear the frog from sixty (60) coordinates away, so not too far. I like to run about forty coordinates, or to a decent looking landmark.
# From this new spot, listen again. If the frog in the same direction as before you haven't gone far enough, mark this spot with mud or sand as above and move further down the coast. Hopefully he changed direction on you (changed ears), mark this spot with the mud or sand, whichever one you DIDN'T use before.
# Now we should have one mud and one sand marking the bounds of our search area. We know are frog is in there somewhere, we just have to find him.
# Move to a point about half way between your two bounds. Listen for the frog.
# When you hear him, again mark the direction.
# Move to a point about halfway from this spot to the bound on the side you heard the frog.
# Repeat process; listen, mark, move halfway until you have a space about as wide as your avatar.
## When you are on top of the frog it will be LOUD. If you have gotten to the spacing about as wide as your avatar and it is still quiet, you aren't in the right spot
# When you have your space about as wide as your avatar and the frog is LOUD, it is time to POUNCE and catch your frog.

By removing on of the shores you remove this condition.

What to do
Now that you have found your frog, you want to catch him.

What you need:

1. The catching of frogs depends on the ability to distinguish between the strength of the left and right channels of the audio output.

What you need to know:

1. The direction of a sound is based on which way the CAMERA is facing, not your avatar. You can see this by standing where you can hear apiaries, swing your camera around without moving your avatar, the sound will switch from side to side
2. The apparently volume of sounds in the game is dependent on distance from the source. You will see this in many things, such as cicada cages. Far away they are a barely audible noise, up close they can rattle the windows.
3. Frogs (and cicadas for that matter) can be heard at most sixty (60) coordinates away.
4. There can be more than one frog within audible range of a given spot.
5. Many people will tell you about the “shadow that used to be there”, don't worry about not being able to see it anymore. In two tellings, catching more frogs than I care to count, I have seen the shadow very few times. So long as you can get the sound out in some manner you can tell left from right channels, you don't need the shadow one bit.

Where to look:

1. First you need to find a frog before you can catch them. By removing on of the shores you remove this condition.

What to do:
Now that you have found your frog, you want to catch him.

1. STOP running
2. Swing you camera so that it is looking out over the water perpendicular to the plane of the shoreline.
3. Listen for the frog, note down which side you hear him on, right or left
4. Swing you camera around 180 degrees so that it is looking in over the land, still perpendicular to the plane of the shoreline
5. Listen again, when you hear the frog, it should have switched sides.
5.1. The swinging the camera bit around isn't strictly needed, but I find it is helpful in making sure my first bearing is correct.
6. Mark this spot. I like to drop 1 mud or 1 sand to mark the spot. This is simply because where you are hunting frogs mud and sand are readily available. The trick here is to uses one when you hear him on the left, the other when you hear him on the right. For example "Mud" is left, "Sand" is to the right. It doesn't matter which one you use on which side, so long as you always use the same one when you hear the frog in that direction
7. Run down the shore a ways, remembering that you can only hear the frog from sixty (60) coordinates away, so not too far. I like to run about forty coordinates, or to a decent looking landmark.
8. From this new spot, listen again. If the frog in the same direction as before you haven't gone far enough, mark this spot with mud or sand as above and move further down the coast. Hopefully he changed direction on you (changed ears), mark this spot with the mud or sand, whichever one you DIDN'T use before.
9. Now we should have one mud and one sand marking the bounds of our search area. We know are frog is in there somewhere, we just have to find him.
10. Move to a point about half way between your two bounds. Listen for the frog.
11. When you hear him, again mark the direction.
12. Move to a point about halfway from this spot to the bound on the side you heard the frog.
13. Repeat process; listen, mark, move halfway until you have a space about as wide as your avatar.
13.1. When you are on top of the frog it will be LOUD. If you have gotten to the spacing about as wide as your avatar and it is still quiet, you aren't in the right spot
14. When you have your space about as wide as your avatar and the frog is LOUD, it is time to POUNCE and catch your frog.
Demonstrated by merek in Saqqarah on 2009-02-02.

Description
According to the official in-game information from the University of Body:

In the Test of the Safari you will learn to track and capture seven species of Egyptian fauna. Each species has unique behaviors and tracking methods, and each must be accomplished four times. More information about each species can be found here.

Achieving principles
To complete the principles of this test, and gaining a level, do the following:
*Build a Fennec trap
*See a Gazelle
*Force an Otter to move to another hole
*Capture an Ibis
*Drop a Rabbit for a hungry Falcon
*Detect the signs of a Fennec

Start the test
To accept/start the test, go to any University of Body and go to the Tests menu.

The minimum level to accept this test is: 12

Complete the test
Capture/tap 4 of each kind of Egypt's animals (listed below).

Keeping track of progress
To review which animals you have captured/tagged:
#click on yourself (or press Esc)
#select Tests menu
#select Test of the Safari
#select Read my Log Book
A popup will appear, stating your finds and captures, and how many remain.

Strength bonus
You will get a +1 permanent strength bonus for every 4 animals that you capture/tap/find (maximum 4 per type). So if you find 2 falcons and 2 fennecs, you should get a strength bonus. There are 7 animals, times 4, meaning that you can get a maximum bonus of +7 in this way. Strength bonus increases the ability to carry 500 more weight (not bulk) per 1 bonus point.

Guilds dedicated to the Safari test
Bullfrogs
Bullfrog Hunting Guide

Official game info from University of Body:

Bullfrogs exhibit almost perfect camouflage, but their distinctive sound gives them away. High Dexterity helps capture these creatures.

* Bullfrogs only appear between 6pm through 6am (evening/night, Egyptian time).
* Bullfrogs always live on the edge of water. This can be any type of water, like a pond, a lake, a river or a sea shore.
*To search for bullfrogs more effectively, try searching near a sea shore instead of river bank or small lake/pond. If you search at a river bank, consider the possibility that the bullfrog could be on the other side of the river. In both cases be aware that bullfrogs might be located on small islands in the river or off the coast that are within the hearing range but outside of your reach (even with a Ferry Boat).
*It helps to use stereo audio equipment (stereo headset/speakers) to pinpoint where the sound comes from (left/right) and determine the loudness of the sound better. The direction of the sound is based on your CAMERA position, not your character position.
*There are a number of different sounds, but they usually lead to the same bullfrog. Sounds usually play at least once per minute, sometimes more frequent.
*Go to the exact location where the sound is loudest and where a specific direction cannot be distinguished. You should be on top of the location of the bullfrog.
*Click on yourself (or press Esc key), go to Tests menu, select Test of the Safari, and click on "Capture a bullfrog."
*When the bullfrog is not captured, move around 1 or 2 coordinates and try again.
*Failing to catch a bullfrog uses the endurance timer. There is no timer if you are successful in a capture attempt.

Desert Rats
Official game info from University of Body:

Fast-moving Desert Rats blend perfectly with Egypt's terrain, but their distinctive tracks will lead to them every time. Be aware that the wind will cover up tracks over time.

<gallery>
Image:footprints.jpg|footprints
Image:footprints_wide.jpg|footprints F7 default view
</gallery>

*It seems they are viewable at the default F7 camera; a little more visible than last tale.
You need 1 canvas and 4 boards to set up a Desert Rat Trap. These are not normal buildings: they don't appear on the ground and they don't last more than an instant. Either they catch the rat immediately, or they don't. The materials are NOT consumed if you fail to catch the rat.

Materials are ONLY consumed when you catch the rat. You can try as often as you want with the materials for one cage. It will give a short End timer. - Taemon

To catch a rat in your trap, you first need to follow the tracks in the direction of travel. Look closely at a track and you'll see rough toe prints on one end of the track. Using a very close-up single F8 camera view and lowering your texture resolution (click yourself/Utility/Options: Video) can be very helpful in seeing the details of the tracks. Once you know which way the rat is traveling, continue to follow the tracks until they end. There can be fairly large gaps between tracks, so scan a good-sized area for further tracks. Once you think you've found the forward-most track, set your trap in front of it. If that was the most recently made track, you should catch a rat. If you don't catch one, scan further ahead for more tracks while your END timer runs down.

Also, rats can double back and go in circles. The toe prints can help you understand the path of travel when tracks criss-cross or do other confusing things. -- Ankh-EnDa

Tips for Catching that Rat:

*Rat tracks are spaced in proportion to their age, the older the tracks, the further apart they will be.
*Rat tracks do not immediate disappear once the rat is caught. The tracks stay and fade out in accordance with the same schedule as for above
*If you are following an active set of tracks, the next set of prints will show up within a few seconds in front of the last set.
*Rats are known to be suicidal. They have been observed to jump off the cliffs at the edge of the world, drown themselves in bodies of water.
*Rats despawn and move on by themselves, they do not wait around to be caught. Their tracks also won't immediately go away

Build the trap using your menu: Projects | Tests | Tests of the Safari | Set up a Desert Rat Trap. It helps to pin the menu when you start tracking.

The rats can climb up 90 degree cliffs, catch them fast if they are near one.

Fennec
Official game info from University of Body:

Build a Fennec trap using boards and rope. Each night, traps on the outskirts of a pack will show signs of the creatures, and traps within 250 coordinates will capture one. At least four different subspecies of Fennecs must be captured and released.

*Building a Fennec trap takes 4 Boards and 1 Rope and can only be build on sandy soil (when sand icon is shown).
*Checking your traps once per Egyptian day should be sufficient, since the status might only change once per day, at 4:00am. (Note: likely has changed to 2AM)
*There are at least 5 kinds of Fennecs. One each of 4 different sub-species must be captured. Sub-species include:
**Pygmy
**Short-haired
**Sharp-toothed
**Ruddy
**Bushy-tailed
**Furry
*There are 3 possible messages:
*#"The Trap is perfectly clean, not even a Fennec hair to be seen.", which means that there are no fennecs near.
*#"Although the trap doesn't contain a live animal, you definitely see signs of Furry Fennecs!", which means that a fennec should be within 250 to 600 coordinates. Build more traps within that range (outside the 250 coords circle).
*#"You have captured a Furry Fennec! You let the little fellow go to region his pack.", which means that you will have captured a fennec of a specific subspecies, as indicated.
*After you have captured all 4 subspecies of fennecs, it is a good custom to make your trap usable by anyone, to help others find good locations for capturing fennecs. Announcing locations to your friends, guild chat or even public chat might be helpful. Listing them here is also a good idea.

Separate page for Fennec locations (map/table): click here
Fennec locations (Region, coordinates, type of find: near/capture, date):
* Caught Bushy tailed - Peret II-9 700am - SA 2200, 950 - public trap now - Built traps 150 coords in each direction, checked on Peret II-11, only signs, no fennecs. Pack seems to have moved east...
* ...

Known Fennec locations from Tale 3:

Pro-tip:
*An easy way to catch fennecs is if someone announces a capture of a type you have not caught, build a trap 250 coordinates away in each cardinal direction from the announced capture point.
*This must be done before the fennecs move at 4:00am. After 4:00am, check your four traps and one will have a fennec!(Note: this has likely changed to 2am!)

Gazelle
Official game info from University of Body:

Gazelles run faster than humans. The key to tagging a Gazelle is to tire it out. Strong teamwork is a must.

<gallery>
image:gazelle2.jpg
</gallery>

The method of tagging a gazelle described below is merely meant as a suggested way to do it. However, it has proven to be a very successful way to have as many people as possible benefit from it. If this method is used correctly, everyone in the group should have a chance to tag it. Because of this, and especially because it's very hard (if not impossible) to do this by yourself, the method described below is recommended.

*Gazelles appear randomly in Egypt. Could be anywhere, but mostly in less populated areas.
*Unless completely hyped with speed/dexterity bonuses, it's almost impossible to capture a Gazelle by yourself or even with only a few people.
*It is custom to announce a gazelle in an Egypt-wide channel like E! and form a large group. Let people come in, even if it takes half an hour.
*Everyone should position around the gazelle in a circle (like in the image above) and when the group is complete, one person should be appointed leader.
*If the circle around the gazelle is wide enough and nobody approaches the gazelle, the gazelle is almost guaranteed to just stand there.
*If the gazelle is close to an unpassable body of water (steep cliffs don't work, they can walk up there, even if 90 degrees), it is easier to enclose it. Making a double lined half-circle around it can be considered.
*On command of the leader, the group decreases the size of the circle slowly, moving in on the gazelle step by step.
*The gazelle will panic and move around. Warping a few coordinates in any direction is also possible. The gazelle is likely to escape from the circle.
*From this moment on, the group should chase the gazelle, but keep a certain distance. If the gazelle stops running, form a new circle around it and start over.
*When a gazelle has become tired, this is visible because it will let it's head hang down. Up to this moment, it's head will be upright.
*When this happens (tiring it out), it will not move until it gathers new energy to run again. This status will remain for about 10-20 seconds.
*The leader of the group signals everyone to tag. At this point, everyone can run up to the gazelle and click it. After tagging it, a popup should appear for each individual who tags it.
*As soon as you've tagged it, it is important to move away from the gazelle again. If not everyone has had the chance to tag it, this might be a way to keep it in sight and repeat the process.
*After regaining energy, the gazelle will run away again. Everyone who has not tagged it by then, should say so. If this is a reasonable large percentage of the group, try chasing it again.

Falcons
Official game info from University of Body:

To identify a Falcon Roost, drop a Rabbit. A falcon will take it sometime within the next 5 minutes (but never within the first minute), and will fly off toward the nearest roost. Trees may be checked for roosts, but doing so is exhausting!

*Searching trees for falcon roosts seems to be triggering the endurance timer.
*Dropping a rabbit isn't completely necessary to find falcons. There's always a tiny chance of finding a falcon roost in any tree.
*When you drop a rabbit, wait for a few minutes till it disappears. When that happens, read in your Main chat screen in which direction (North, South, East, West, Northeast, Southeast, Northwest, Southwest) you can look. Please bear in mind that this includes any tree in a wide range (anywhere between 1 and 500 coords?). The directions don't always seem to be very precise; for example North could also be leaning towards Northeast or Northwest. Use the map (F3) or compass (F4) to determine the direction to search.
*A tool to triangulate falcons can be found at http://hem.bredband.net/titgar/FalconFinder2.html
*Especially in the first weeks after opening this test, it might be useful to look for the coordinates 0,0 on the map and search around in this area. Rumor has it that all falcons start here, and then spread out over Egypt slowly. Some people call this a bug or even an exploit, but that is debatable because in the game as a whole it is not uncommon for things to happen or appear in specific locations or areas (examples: sheep, mushrooms, herbs, metal ore veins). If this really was a bug or exploit, Teppy and/or the development team would have made changes to this.

Ibis
Official game info from University of Body:

Only one flock of Ibis inhabits Egypt. Tagging a single bird causes it to flee, but the rest of the flock is unfazed. The flock tends to move at night, and resettle in the morning.

<gallery>
Image:ibis.jpg|Ibis</gallery>

*The ibis flock consists of 21 birds and appears at a random spot on any coastline at 6:00am. Any ibis not tagged by 6:00pm will despawn.
*It is common courtesy to announce the flock of Ibis somewhere. Whether or not you want to inform your guild brothers and sisters first, or your close friends, or straight away post their location in the E! channel, is up to you. But if you want to see some fun havoc after you've spotted the flock, announce it in E! and see some people go into panic-mode.
*When you announce a flock's location, please mention the region, its coordinates and where it is close to (e.g. schools or universities, for example).
*It is common courtesy for someone to stay with the flock, and keep announcing how many there are left.
*It is also common courtesy for people on their way to the flock to announce that fact. Others coming from far can then estimate if there would be any left on their arrival, thus making a decision to go or not.
*It is considered poor sportsmanship to build obstructions to prevent an ibis from being visible, e.g. a mine or quarry. Likewise, ibis should not be "reserved"-- they are strictly first come, first serve.

Otters
Official game info from University of Body:

Otters build an underground network of tunnels. it is possible to put a stick (wood) down to block a portion of the network, but if too many holes are blocked, the Otter will get annoyed and eat a stick!

*While out and bout to trap otters carry a avg of 20 boards on you. It appears this tale the otters are fixed...not like last tale. This tale you must trap them between 3 holes now. Easy way to do this is to map out the hole locations, if more then 3 boards are placed wrong the otter will eat the boards.
** Note - Otters seem to put up with a variable number of boards ... a guildmate had one eat when he placed more than 3 boards, I've had one eat on more than 4 (ate when a 5th was placed) and my wife had one eat a board on the placement of the 10th board. - Tahrqa
:: I caught one after placing 7 boards, with none eaten. Probably just lucky, though. --Shebi 20:44, 11 February 2009 (EST)
**Also Note: Once caught the holes (and any boards in them) disappear.
*Sometimes otter's holes can be hidden by objects like mines, quarries.
*Can be found in grassland or desert and their holes look like silt, but brownish. Or a round version of a flimsy brick rack, if you will.

First part
Introduction
So here you are, freshly minted Egyptian. You learned how to move about, you learned gathering wood and grow flax. Now the whole of Egypt awaits you. What will you do?

This starter guide is meant to answer some of your questions and give you some general pointers. It is by no means exhaustive, not even for the first phase of the game, since that would be impossible. Feel free to suggest any new topics you think should be included.

The first lesson you must learn is this one: Take one step at a time. A Tale in the Desert has many, many possibilities. It is easy to get overwhelmed by them, and you can never try them all. So instead, take your time exploring what you can do and what you want to do.

The second lesson is this one: Press F7 and get rid of that stupid camera they put you up with at first. Explore Self -> Utility -> Camera if you want to try some other options.

Settling - Your First Buildings
Some people feel the need to have a place called home. Some are content with roving around the land for a while. Either way, sooner or later you will have to pick a spot for your first real building: a compound. A compound (or cp, as it’s usually called) is the place where you will keep your buildings, your tools and your stuff. (So don’t think of it as a cozy place with a bed and a shower. It’s actually more like a factory.) Building a compound is also required for one of your Initiation tests, which will give you a level and unlock an entire Discipline of real Tests. For the construction itself, including what you need to know and do, go here.

There are several things to keep in mind when picking a spot to build your compound. Egypt is divided into thirteen regions. This page gives a handy map. In general, the farther a region is from the center of Egypt, the quieter it will be. A busy area means more people to ask questions and to interact with, but also more lag and fewer good spots still available for compound-building. It’s up to you what you prefer.

There are resources you can’t have enough of, so you want those close to your home. Wood is a prime example. Silt is another. Clay, slate, grass, even sand should be about in abundance. In short, pick a spot near water and trees and you’re halfway there.

You will probably travel a lot, so keep an eye on the Chariot Stop in your region of choice. More on travel later. At this point you can travel freely, and you should do so. Pick some random spots to teleport to, run around for a while, and get a feel of the place. When you enter a region a chat window of that region will open. Scroll up and read it through. Maybe ask some questions to the people there (but don't bother asking, "Should I settle here?" since all of them will answer, "Yes!").

Remember: you can always move if your original picked spot isn’t what you’d hoped it would be. You can even have several compounds. Don’t be too shy to make that first choice, but give it the time it deserves. And wherever you choose to settle, there will be helpful people around.

One thing that you should realize is that on the mainland you can no longer build Small Distaffs and Flax Combs on open ground. They must be built within a compound. So you can only make the most basic of things before you have a compound, and only enough to build a compound with.

Skills and Techs
Skills and Technologies generally allow you to use or build more advanced buildings, or sometimes make you better at things you can already do.

You learn techs from Universities. They're always free, but you have to go to a University where other players have paid the right research costs to unlock the techs you want. Everytime you have raised a few levels, make a pass along all universities and learn all you can. In fact, that is about the first thing you should do.

Skills are learned from Schools and every school of the same type has the same skills available. This means you can learn them at schools in any region. Skills cost tuition, meaning materials. Make a round of schools every now and then in your chosen region, and see what they can teach you, taking into account the resources you have at your disposal.

A complete list of techs can be found at: Technologies<br>
A complete list of skills can be found at: Skills<br>

Other People
People are your single most important resource. They will give you knowledge, aid and courage. The one difference between ATITD and other MMORPG’s is not so much the lack of killing, but the maturity of its public. Be civil. It will be rewarded.

There are two kinds of people: those who ask for things and those who refuse gifts. Be the second kind. Asking for resources is of no use, since other people have to collect them as you do. But you can use easily-collected resources for trade, so don’t think you are useless!

People might offer you tools. It might be hard to accept things without giving anything in return, but tools make you a more worthwhile member of the community, so accept them. Do not accept resources you might well gather yourself, such as wood and bricks. Show the community you can earn your own living. It will pay off.

One thing I am sure you have noticed already is the dearth of documentation or in-game hints and tutorials. Some say this is the developers being lazy, but there is another reason. A Tale in the Desert is a highly social game. You are meant to interact with other people. One of those interactions is the passing of knowledge to new players, teaching them how things work, bringing them into the fold of the community. And although most people will be willing to help you, it is the role of Mentors to bring you, the new player, up to speed. Mentors come in all manner of qualities, some good, some bad, and just because someone says they are a Mentor doesn’t mean they are a good one. Most people are good, but if you feel you aren’t getting as much out of a Mentor-Mentee relationship as you are giving, perhaps it is time to find a new Mentor.

Lastly, there are two special classes of people, the Game Masters and the Developers. Game Masters are players just like you that have volunteered their time to help out the other players, deal with minor issues, and so on. Be nice. They are players too. They have goals they wish to achieve just like you, and they will respond as soon as they are able. There is not always a Game Master around, so it might take some time for them to get to you. The Developers are exactly that, the people who write the computer code for you game. While they are no longer active players, most are also volunteers, and just as importantly there are very few of them. Unlike many MMORPGs you can get to know the people who write the game, and the level of feedback from the player base as to what direction the game takes is incredible.

Trading
Everyone needs to trade sooner or later. You’re going to need things you can’t acquire yet, especially tools. You might, for instance, want to acquire a hatchet for collecting wood. At this point you don’t have valuable goods at your disposal so you’ll need to trade with bulk goods -- stuff that is easy but boring to collect, such as slate. There are some bulk goods that become easier to produce as you become more advanced, like wood or flax. There are others that still take the exact same amount of effort to collect as they did the first day no matter how much you have done, like slate or silt. These are often good choices for trading when you are new, since the players with the stuff you want still need them and cannot get them any easier than you can.
You will also notice there is no official currency in the game, no “gold piece” or anything similar. While we have the ability to create our own currency (and some have), the value of a given resources rises and falls over time, and prices can vary wildly form one person to the next. Most people are willing to negotiate. As you are new, you might want to ask someone you trust, like your Mentor, if something is a good deal or not.

Chat channels
Communication in Egypt is mainly done through the chat channels. You always have the channel Main, which is for in-game messages and people talking near you, and the channel System, which is for messages from the game staff. There is also the region channel (unless you turn it off, which we recommend you don't do). We strongly advise you to add another channel: the Egypt-wide chat channel E!. You do this by typing /join E!. This channels is moderated, meaning that your messages will not show up immediately. Read it trough to get a feel of what’s living in Egypt this day and age.

Traveling
Traveling in Egypt is time consuming. There is nothing like the easy warping around you might have experienced in other games. You walk (well, run actually). You’d better get used to that as soon as possible and plan for it.

You can use the chariot service from the outset to travel quickly between regions. Later on you can learn the Navigation and Exploration Travel skills, which allow you set waypoints and other markers that you travel to instantly for the cost of "travel time". For now, you will need to understand how the chariot service works.

Every region has one chariot stop (commonly called cs) that serves as the center of the region. From a chariot stop you can take the chariot to other regions. (You don’t actually see a chariot; you just press "Travel now" and you find yourself in another place. It’s magic.) A free chariot will leave every twenty minutes; for a timespan of two minutes you can travel for free to another region. Outside that window you can also travel, but it costs you "travel time", which is five times the amount of time it would cost to walk there. You acquire travel time while offline. (We talk about Offline Chores a little more at the end of this guide.)

I need HELP!
Eventually you are going to reach a point where you need help with something, something you just don’t understand how it works, or why it doesn’t work. You have a few paths open to you. First, if you belong to a guild, ask there. Or you could ask a Mentor. If you are still having trouble, you could ask in the regional chat channel, or for a wider audience in one of the general microphone chat channels like E!. The people of Egypt are generally very helpful, and will answer most questions for you.

If you still have trouble, you can place a call for a Game Master. But be warned, the GMs won’t answer questions about how to do something. They will only help you if there is something amiss with the game itself. As a new player, it would be advised that you do not place a developer call directly unless a GM tells you to. The developers are very busy most of the time, and the GMs will be able to tell you if it warrants the attention of the developers.

Second Part
Levels
With the start of Tale three, a leveling system was implemented. This was meant to give new players a feeling of structure and also to make them feel more at home. You probably played other MMORPGs. Well, this is different.

First, keep in mind that leveling in ATITD isn’t half as important as it is in other games. Levels will unlock the ability to learn new skills and techs, but you will rarely, if ever, need one you can’t have yet. There are 70 levels, very few will actually reach that many, since some of them can only be acquired by a few people at a time. Also, unlike many games, there is a diminishing return in what you get as you go up in levels, so while there is value in attaining higher levels, there is not as much disparity between a 20th level person compared to a 40th level person as from a 20th to a first-level person. In fact, there is no new skills/techs/tests or any other benefit past Level 42

Levels gives a clear overview.

Levels are achieved by:
*One Level (always your first) for completing Citizenship
*One Level for each Initiation to a discipline
*One Level for each principle to a Test you complete. If you pass the test before otherwise completing the principle you will be credited for completing the principle too and get that level. There are, or will be, (not all of them are known yet) seven tests in seven disciplines for a total of forty-nine tests.
*One Level for each new, higher rank you achieve.
*One Level for each Oracleship you get beyond the first

Disciplines
In Egypt, we recognize the Seven Disciplines of Man. All tests, as well as skills and technologies, are divided into these. They are:

*Architecture (Building Stuff bigger and better)
*Art and Music (The finer things in life)
*Harmony (Get to know your fellow Egyptians... and gamble on their progress!)
*Human Body (Self-improvement, exploration and indulgence)
*Leadership (Getting others to recognize or follow your direction)
*Thought (Designing puzzles)
*Worship (Honoring the gods, often by ritual, sometimes including sacrificing large quantities of stuff)

Within each Discipline there are seven ranks past Initiate. You advance in rank within each Discipline each time you pass one of its tests. You can pass the tests in any order. Only the total number counts. The ranks are:

*Initiate
*Student - Pass one Test in a Discipline
*Prentice - Pass two Tests in a Discipline
*Journeyman - Pass three Tests in a Discipline
*Scribe - Pass four Tests in a Discipline
*Master - Pass five Tests in a Discipline
*Sage - Pass six Tests in a Discipline
*Pharaoh’s Oracle - Pass all seven Tests, you have achieved "perfection" in that Discipline

You can have ranks in more then one Discipline at a time. You will be known by default as the highest rank you have achieved. If you have achieved the same rank in two or more Disciplines, you will be know as <i>Rank</i> of <i>Number</i>. Some examples: Someplayer, Student of Architecture has passed one test in Architecture and no other tests; Someplayer, Student of Two has passed one test in two different disciplines and none in the other five; Someplayer, Prentice of Architecture has passed two tests in Architecture and either zero or one test in each of the other Disciplines.

Tests
There is a total of forty nine Tests divided into seven each for the seven Disciplines. Not all Tests are equal in the amount of effort it takes to pass them, some are hard, and some are easy. Don’t expect to pass every test, only one person, Orchid, has in all the history of Egypt.

Tests cover a wide range of resources, ranging from thousands of bricks to tens of people. Every test has a principle, meant to give you a flavor of that test. Passing a principle will gain you a level. So if the Test of the Obelisk means building a big tower, the principle of the Obelisk means building a small tower. Of course, you can just build a big tower, passing principle and test in one go. Usually though, you will naturally pass a principle before passing a test.

Tests can be generally divided into two classes, Limited Pass and Unlimited Pass. As you might guess, these relate to how many people can pass a given test. Unlimited Pass tests generally have a fixed goal, such as getting seven strength points, and when you accomplish that you pass. Limited Pass tests are exactly that, there is a limit to how many can pass the test. These tests also are competitive, so that you have to achieve a score that is in the top for that test for that scoring period. The number of passes varies per test, sometimes one, sometimes as many as seven. The time between passing rounds also varies, although one week is common. You can see the current list of all tests here.

Guilds
Guilds are a grouping of people who have come together for a reason. Guilds can roughly be divided into three categories: Home Guilds, Dedicated Guilds, and Chat Guilds. These categories aren't official, just descriptive. You don’t need to join a guild. But you can join as many of them as you wish.

Home Guilds are where you live, people with whom you have chosen to share your space, resources, and your time. While you are not restricted to doing so, most people have one guild they consider their Home Guild.

Dedicated Guilds are created for a specific purpose, like are large project or activity like beetle breeding (yes, you can breed beetles!). Usually these guilds have a limited and specific set of resources. Many people belong to many different dedicated Guilds.

Chat Guilds are exactly that, a grouping of people with no other purpose then to talk with one another.

Within a guild there are also ranks. These are used to set permissions to use guild-owned property, such as chests.

IMPORTANT: You can join as many or as few guilds as you wish.

The Wiki
The phrase you will hear most in your first days will be “it’s in the wiki”. The ATITD-wiki is our collective knowledge base and it’s full of things you need or want to know. Unfortunately, our collective knowledge base is badly organized, and it may take you some time to get used to it. Start at the homepage, which gives some handy links, and make extensive use of the search function.

For starters, you might want to bookmark http://atitd.org/wiki/tale4/Resources and http://atitd.org/wiki/tale4/Buildings, as those are the ones you'll probably use most often.

And don't forget the aforementioned Levels!

Offline Chores
In Egypt, you can do things while not there! This handy function lets your avatar do boring stuff while you sleep. They will unlock if you have proven you can do it yourself. For instance, you can let your avatar collect wood after you have collected 2500 wood by yourself. Offline time is distributed equally among all the tasks you have selected, so if you select only “Gather wood” you will collect more wood then if you select both “Gather Wood” and “Grow Onions”. Accumulating Travel Time also counts in this distribution, so if you want a lot of it, only check that.

Time
To keep things properly complicated, Egypt knows three kinds of time. There is the real time, as we all know it, but of course people live in vastly different timezones. There is Egypt-time, about one third of real time. And there is Teppy-time, somewhat slower than real time. Time explains the details.

Commands
You can set certain commands in the chat window. When you log in, /ts (timestamp) is convenient to see how long ago that interesting tidbit of information was mentioned. /af (add friend) adds a friend (press F11 for you friends list). /webpass lets you set a password to enter the wiki. Commands gives an overview.

Time In Egypt
During your sojourn in Egypt you will find that time is rather important, but time in Egypt is not as simple as one might think. There are actually three kinds of time that relate to Egypt:

Real Time: This is the most apparent time, as is it based on the time in the real world. All Events done by the game, as well as other things that are scheduled are listed in Real Time. Real time is in short used to tell you when something will start but not how long something will happen

Teppy Time: Teppy Time is similar to real time in that 1 Teppy Minute = 1 Real Minute + Server Lag. Teppy Time is therefore close to real time, but not exactly. While the amount of server lag is not predictable, and so Teppy Time is not exactly predictable, a good rule of thumb is Teppy Time is about 110% of Real Time. Teppy Time is used to measure duration. Many of the timers in the game are based on Teppy Time. If you are waiting for a chariot ride to be free and is says “5 minutes”, those are 5 Teppy Minutes. The same is true for the duration of food, or basically anything that is a length of time displayed within the game.

Egypt Time: Egypt Time is the time in the day and night cycle. Usually it is useful for things that occur on a cyclical basis, the most famous being “Shroom Time” (that period of time during the game when mushrooms spawn and can be picked). Generally used to reference anything of that nature, which occurs on a repeating basis and is part of the day and night cycle in the game. Egypt Time is very simple, 1 Teppy Minute = 3 Egypt Minutes, so 1 Egypt Day = 8 Teppy Hours.

You might ask yourself why this game has this maddeningly complex system of time. Why can’t Teppy Time and Real Time be the same? The answer is actually quite simple. It is intentional game, and to allow the greatest participation in all aspects of the game by the most number of people, time must vary. If there was no Teppy Time, and the time marched along lock step with Real Time then things like mushrooms hunting would not be feasible for some people, as they would always occur at the same time, a time that it might not be possible
