Overview
The theory on gearboxes and how to design them was all well and good. Here's how I applied it.
My early builds are 2 output, I know I should be making 3 output just to make them more versatile. These aren't recommendations either, just records. I can already see that my first designs were not well optimised and I've only just begun.
Basic principles
- use the ratio with the least gears to achieve the output
- avoid large gears, they are way too expensive
- have three outputs where the constraints (30 gears, 15 shafts) allow, and it's not too expensive

There were LOTS of options here, these were the ones I picked out to try and fit together. They weren't all first picks. In the end I had to use some large gears because
- I was running into shaft/gear limitations
- The B and G outputs were in the same range - but I needed some way to cross the D train
