Resetting!

2 days 22 hours left in this Demi-Pharaoh round.
Arame: Howdy there, all
nezbia: Hello Arame!
Arame: Catching up on some of the chat so far - with everyone's consent, I'll start logging that as well, so we don't lose any to the foul scroll-away.
Arame: For the record, I've probably got the strongest name recognition, but that doesn't necessarily make me the strongest leader, to MrFubar's comment. Burying my head in spreadsheets for a week or two doesn't necessarily qualify as leadership ;)
nezbia: Lol... understood :)
Arame: I also didn't catch who else is in this round - scrolled away from me!
nezbia: Umm... i know one is nunzia
Arame: Thank ya - I'm sure the others will pop in later today as well, so we'll find out soon enough.
nezbia: Most I don't know but have seen around on an occasion
nezbia: Yes, I feel a little intimidated because I am the newest person here :)
Arame: I definitely recognize a couple of the names from E! or from around Egypt, yes.
nezbia: this is my first tale... and the shortest time in egypt compared you ya'll! ;)
Arame: Eh, don't be too intimidated. Name recognitiion is helpful for the final election, but not necessarily the end-all be-all.
nezbia: I understand.... I guess I fear that this being a popularity test versus who is best for the position
Arame: Well, it partly is. There are going to be some people that will vote based on "Hey, I've heard of that guy, and not in a bad way." - but most people (I hope) are going to read the debates and choose the best candidate.
nezbia: Yes, I think you always have that... I am not in it for popularity... :)
Arame: All that said, I am running for this seriously (already passed KM).
nezbia: I could put out a campaign...
nezbia: but... they are words... I would rather show people how I am
nezbia: and I hope those that i do come in contact with.. have seen that
Arame: Yeah, that's always the difficult part, putting the how into words in these debates.
Arame: FYI - I'm just on lunch - I operate at GMT-4 right now.
Arame: So, would you like to talk about why we each want to be DP or feel that we'd be good for the role? I have a limited timeframe, but we can start that discussion, if you'd like.
nezbia: That is fine Arame
nezbia: I know for me... dp is a title
nezbia: I lead by example at all times
nezbia: I am honest, I don't judge and believe I am fair
Arame: All good qualities for a DP to have.
nezbia: As to why I want to be dp... I believe that as a leader .. they should be able to follow
nezbia: be open
nezbia: and most of all...
nezbia: have respect for t hemselves first... so they can better respect others
nezbia: I can say.. I have been in rl leadership roles...
nezbia: and to vote for me... but I want to gain the trust of the players in the group
nezbia: Show them.. I am not full of bull and would honestly do the best job possible! :)
nezbia: I am not well known... however, I am well liked :)
nezbia: Those who know me... they are the one's who encouraged me to run for dp
Arame: Great, that's a good sign!
nezbia: don't get me wrong.. :)
nezbia: I am the biggest sweetheart around... but i don't tolerate disrespect either
Arame: I'm always torn as to whether to go after DP myself - it's a lot of responsibility to take on, and part of my approach to Egypt is that it *is* a game.
nezbia: I have already come across someone in my guild that was kicked out for it...
nezbia: It is a game! :) and it is a big responsibility
Arame: But, because we're dealing with other RL people, there's more of a commitment than a "normal"? game.
nezbia: And yes.. knowing who to vote for... is a problem
nezbia: Yes I agree.
nezbia: What I find myself doing is asking those I know about the dp caniddates
nezbia: what do they know of them... what kind of person are they
Arame: Good approach to take, yes.
nezbia: I know anyone can say anything...
nezbia: but it doesn't always come from there heart
nezbia: For me.. I speak from the heart.. what you see is what you get :)
Arame: Right on! I'll admit, I have a cynicism filter on most of my chat - I am naturally cynical, but I keep it in check in chats & such.
Arame: (and you don't want to drive in a car with me, I'm loud & obnoxious, with the windows up!!)
nezbia: lol
Arame: As far as myself and DP is concerned, I see the DP as having a number of potential roles in Egypt - and I say potential, because not every DP will fit every role.
nezbia: nod
Arame: DP as leader - someone who organizes events and activities (Rabble is the best example of this in Egypt, I think).
Arame: DP as mediator - someone who helps to resolve conflicts. This usually tends to be more low-key.
nezbia: nod
Arame: DP as a figurehead - the title itself suggests a certain level of confidence Egypt-wide in the person, so their word might count for more in a discussion.
Arame: And DP as mentor - someone who really helps out new people, or helps people achieve goals that they might be struggling with.
Arame: I'm leaving out DP as disciplinarian - I don't think it's a very valid role for the DP, even though the ban is what many focus on.
nezbia: It is...
nezbia: I believe it does go deeper than that .. you are an expample of a true citizen
Arame: As far as my suitability - I'm a decent leader, although I keep it fairly localized. I organized a pilgrimage (with friends and with strangers-now-friends). I've organized a pyramid-build, but with a small group of people.
Arame: With mentor, I'm probably better at helping established people than mentoring new people - I've helped a lot of people with resin for ovens, and I helped some of the early silk-farmers with mats for more farms (figuring the more the better). I give assistance to new people in regional when they ask, but I don't really go out of my way to chase mentoring opportunities.
nezbia: I do not have the background most of you all do, however, with me being new to the game.. it gives egypt a freshe pair of eyes! :)
Arame: Very true - and I only played a bit of T3, so I'm not *that* experienced with the game. I rely on my guildmates, frequently, to answer questions - especially about advanced techs.
nezbia: Part of being a leader is admitting you don't know all
nezbia: I will be the first person to ask for help or if I don't know to let someone know I don't know but i will get the answer for them
Arame: From a figurehead perspective, I think I've already got a certain "status" (probably not the right word I'm looking for), so that aspect wouldn't change much, I'd think.
nezbia: the only status i have here .. is i am the only person who met players before becoming one! :)
Arame: LOL
nezbia: I was at the meet in pgh... so I met a lot of them... :)
nezbia: that was how I ended up here
Arame: I saw that you were in the player meet guild! That's an advantage in and of itself :)
nezbia: Lol... they were just happy i didn't kick them out!! lol
nezbia: j/k
Arame: lol
nezbia: Naw.. they were a good bunch of people...
nezbia: I loved talking with them..
Arame: How did you happen to go to the Meet?
nezbia: It was at the hotel I work at..
nezbia: I met a few who showed up before the meet started...
Arame: Ah, cool - that explains the "kick them out"! I'm slow today!
nezbia: then... ended up meeting them all! :)
nezbia: Yes.. I am security there! :)
Arame: Excellent. I used to do some bouncing on the weekends, but not sure that's even in the same ballpark.
nezbia: In a way... our job is to keep order.. :)
Arame: Yepper - stop problems before they start!
nezbia: Exactly! :)
Arame: The mediator role, though, to touch on that, is the toughest to prove out in-game. I imagine you do deal with that quite a bit through your job, though.
Arame: I'm a software engineer, so it's not actively a big part of my everyday life.
Arame: I can only say that I'm good at balancing both sides and understanding different perspectives, especially in things like the obelisk queue.
Arame: Sometimes you have to agree to disagree, but convincing others of that is where the real challenge comes into play.
Arame: (and if I had an easy answer for that one, I'd have used it already!!)
nezbia: Yes.. to find a reasonable solution is not always easy
nezbia: conflict resolution is not for everyone
nezbia: I happen to be good at ... that is why i do what i do
Arame: Very nice
nezbia: I can diffuse almost any situation...
nezbia: and come to a resolution
nezbia: to where everyone is appeased
nezbia: but don't have a problme asking people to leave either! :)
Arame: LOL
Arame: I do want to hear a little more about the in-guild problem you mentioned earlier, and how you handled that situation. . . but, I need to get back to RL here.
nezbia: no problem.. I am sure I will catch you at some point of the next couple of days
Arame: Before I run off - do you mind if I log this chat where everyone else can get to it? Makes it a bit easier to communicate with everyone on different timezones, etc.
nezbia: That is fine... :) It has been a pleasure! :)
Arame: Pleasure's mine :)
Arame: I'll drop that @ User:Arame/TempChat (unless someone has a better spot for it). Feel free to /copy from here and add to it (please) when I'm not about.

nezbia: Will do! :)
Arame: Take care :)
nezbia: you as well
nezbia: As you can see.. arame got the chat between us! :)
MrFubar: lol
MrFubar: you all americans?
nezbia: lol... i am .. never asked amare
nezbia: I am guessing he is...
MrFubar: :p

nezbia: This is going to be really interesting! :)
nezbia: Good canidates in this one!
MrFubar: yea :)
nezbia: You are my neighbor Arame... PA
Arame: LOL, really?
Arame: Oh, yeah - Pittsburgh
nezbia: lol... yup...
Arame: But I'm SW Ohio, so about 8 hours, but I've been through there a number of times.
nezbia: I've been through there a few times... but I dont think to far down
nezbia: maybe i have... akron....
nezbia: been a while
Nyasara: Well, did not even realize the next round had begun, and that I had advanced :)
Arame: LOL! Hi there Nyasara
Nyasara: I am from America as well, Colorado, in RL I am a non-comissioned officer in the Army, which obviously has given me a teensy bit of experience with conflict resolution
Nyasara: But this is rather different: my piece is simple, and i'll say it now
nezbia: Why hello Nyasara
Nyasara: hi Arame and nezbia...sorry, should have said that first :)
nezbia: Please do...
nezbia: lol
Nyasara: Banning is obviously a last resort, and ultimately one of limited utility, as the person can just make a new account and come back
Nyasara: Therefore, of course, mediating is best whenever possible....
nezbia: that is why i agree with the temp bans to give them a chance
nezbia: kind of like a time out...
Nyasara: Having said that, I have absolutely no problem with using the power to ban if all else has failed. While I count many friends in this game, it is to me a game, a place to relax, and if someone is disrupting that, they need to go, at least temporarily, permanently if necessary
nezbia: I do agree....
Nyasara: I would promise to never use a ban in any situation in which I had the slightest personal interest (guild-mate, associate, etc.) and would support whichever DP I can find to mediate for me
Nyasara: I think that the people who play this game generally are good people who have an interest in community, and therefore mediation should be able to solve most problems, and will work that angle as long as I am needed
Nyasara: I think we would all do that
Nyasara: Not sure what else to say, so I will descend from the pulpit, thanks for your time
nezbia: You are welcome Nayasara and thank you!
Arame: LOL - I always feel like I'm "soap-boxing" whenever I'm in DP rounds :)
Arame: I personally don't see the ban as a legitimate tool in the game, although the temp ban does help that out tremendously.
Nyasara: The temp ban makes a good slap on the wrist, and some people do respond to that kind of wake-up call
Nyasara: i.e. "You done messed up enough that I'm seriously angry, now stop"
Arame: Yeah, definitely.
2 days 15 hours left in this Demi-Pharaoh round.
Arame: The perma-ban, though? The only occasion I'd see it useful for would be intentional griefers, and they've got no particular attachment to their account.
Arame: (before we go too much further, I'm logging chats at User:Arame/TempChat - with your permission, I'll continue doing so. Makes it easier to keep track of the scroll-off)
nezbia: If you have a minute arame... I will explain my situation for you with the guy I requested be removed from our guild
Arame: Yeah, it'll let me take a few minutes away from the kitchen (festival!!)
Arame: (or rather, the spreadsheets)
nezbia: Okay... the guy that was removed....
nezbia: He came to me in a sexual manner
nezbia: inappropriately might i add
nezbia: and it got worse
nezbia: so i went to the elders...
Arame: Ah, that would be a difficult situation.
nezbia: and let them know and requested he be removed
nezbia: I did not want, need or deserve that
Arame: Seems like a good call - was there any attempt at mediating, or was it bad enough to just take immediate action on?
Nyasara: that sort of thing is definitely not to be tolerated
nezbia: yes mediating did not work.. he was jerk
Nyasara: So, my question is this (different topic)....What, truly, do we use to distinguish amongst ourselves
Nyasara: In the first round, I was the one who was not in it for the principle, but one would hope that this is not a factor by now
nezbia: gonna be afk for minute
Arame: I hope so as well - from the discussion we've seen already, that's not the case so far (I've seen chat from at least 5 of us)
Arame: And a difficult question, Nyasara, for certain.
Arame: Earlier, I was talking about the various roles of the DP, which might be one option - we could compare one another based on those aspects. Yendor, I believe, also had some specific ideas for a DP council, which is another differentiation.
Arame: (the having new & specific ideas, that is, as the differentiation itself).
Arame: I'm running for DP and would like to move on, but I'm also very happy to advance another good candidate, and most of the chat that I've seen indicates we have several.
nezbia: sorry gotta log.. rl things... talk to you tomorrow
Arame: G'nite, nezbia.
Nyasara: Good night nezbia.
Nyasara: ok, just caught up on chat from your log
Arame: Ok - you all right with me posting up there? I've had some people in the past who wanted DP kept very private.
Nyasara: I don't care, I don't plan on saying anything that needs to be private
Nyasara: As far as ideas and thoughts, I have two off the top of my head
Nyasara: 1) DP should be a more visible role, and more obvious, short of wiki, I have no idea how to know who the DPs are...should be something posted at voting booths or something, to make more available to new players
Nyasara: 2) In addition, I've been watching E!, and basic ettiquette (sp?) issues like nicking seem to be a big community anger source, which makes sense
Nyasara: However, again, new players just don't have a way to know...I played for a month before I learned E! was there and how to join
Nyasara: Therefore, (and I keep meaning to write this legislation), I think welcome banners should include a pamphlet, which can be written by a DP (or perhaps agreed to by all)
Nyasara: That is "distributed" to all new arrivals when they hit a welcome banner
Arame: Right on. That might be a good way to start addressing the deeper issue of lack-of-mentorship.
Nyasara: (in-game explanation that gets past physics veto or something...cost of X papyrus paper paid by a DP to ULead for printing)
Nyasara: Obviuosly it would not have the strength of law, but it would get things started...no names of guilds or players could be mentioned (to avoid cries that this is a space for DPs to "advertise")
Arame: Good point there.
Nyasara: ugh, when you post this, correct my typos, please :)
Arame: FYI, if you're thinking of writing a law on it, use the forums - there's an area specifically for proofreading & conceptualizing, to try to close the loopholes.
Arame: Although you've thought that out pretty well already, from the sound of it.
Arame: I haven't really looked - is there a good "Welcome to Egypt" guide on the wiki, even? E!, Bazaar, to-do's and to-don'ts?
Nyasara: I've been kicking it around for a while, just been too lazy to get on the forums...and yeah, I'm in software and intelligence, so walking things out a ways to see problems is a specialty of sorts
Nyasara: There is a new player guide, but even getting pointed to the wiki takes trial and error for some
Arame: Yepper, and it looks like it could use some TLC as well.
Nyasara: I'm a firm believer in idiot-proofing things...if it pops up the minute they hit the mainland, then they don't have an excuse
Arame: My problem is, every time I'm near a welcome banner, it's always teleport to 0. I think there needs to be an easier way to tell if new folks are on the Island.
Nyasara: Wait, I know how to distinguish myself, vote for me and get free wine! Why didn't I think of this sooner?
Arame: LOL
Arame: Name recognition is probably my biggest distinguishing factor, which, while useful for the general election, doesn't necessarily make me the best candidate.
Arame: I do share a guild with Kiya, so we speak fairly frequently, and I have good relationships with Astrina & Eldrad - so I know I can cooperate well with the other DPs.
Arame: I'm not going to claim any great distinguishing factors - I think most serious candidates have the same mindset about many of the issues, and understand the roles. RL and in-game experience count for a little more, although RL doesn't always translate to chats.

-- I missed a few lines here --

MrFubar: yea very weird
MrFubar: so..
MrFubar: are you running for DP?
Arame: Yes, I am seriously running (already passed KM last election)
MrFubar: think you'll have a change on winning this election?
Arame: Oh, as much as anyone, I suppose? Hard to say - people know who I am, and I don't *think* I've greatly upset anyone in particular
MrFubar: didn't i saw your name a couple elections back in the egypt wide vote?
Arame: Don't believe so - Coyan/Astrina, Eldrad/murtha, and Kiya alone.
MrFubar: ah right
Arame: Round 2's as far as I've gone before, but I was really aiming for principles at that point. I've had some people (including some people from past rounds) since convince me to legitimately run.
MrFubar: well you sure have my support but im just looking for some hints for KM as i won't be going to rank 2 :p
Arame: LOL
Arame: Are you not interested, or just don't think you'll get the votes here?
MrFubar: Yes im running for DP but I believe you are a better man for the job then I am
Arame: Ah, ok - thank you. That means a lot, and not necessarily an easy thing to say.
MrFubar: Yea a bit unlucky i got with you in rank3 :p
Arame: Well - any points you'd like to bring forward? Ideas you have that you'd like brought forward by whomever it is that advances?
MrFubar: well not that i have any revolutionary ideas for changing egypt. I just wanna see the person for the job
MrFubar: the best*
MrFubar: Do you believe that a DP can give a voice to the devs?
Arame: Give a voice to the devs: do you mean be a voice for the devs to the people, or be a voice for the people to the devs?
MrFubar: last one :)
MrFubar: sorry it's getting late and my english is going backwards then :p
Arame: That's ok, just clarifying.
Arame: I don't know if DP affects that or not, to be honest. People talk to the devs all the time, and they do listen to some of it. Being DP might give it a little extra push, and of course, they're in a position to see issues that could repeat multiple times.
1 day 22 hours left in this Demi-Pharaoh round.
Arame: If someone asked me to talk to the devs about something, though, I don't think I'd have a problem with that (anonymity guaranteed, etc.). But I wouldn't have to be DP to be in that situation, either.
MrFubar: well i think DP is become a bit overrated by the people, like they expect a DP to change the ways of egypt for the better
Arame: There are things that can be done by people to change Egypt, but they're not necessarily related to being DP.
Arame: I think Rabble does an excellent job organizing events and helping people out a lot, for example (I've used him as an example before).
MrFubar: yes i mean in bigger things, like for ex. changing the mining system, or the problem of big gamers putting realli ovens everywere
Arame: Oh, yeah. That's not going to happen from a DP. Or at least, it's as likely as the conservatives & the liberals setting aside their differences and agreeing on something. . .
Arame: Obelisk queues will continue, and competitive obelisk builders will continue, and they'll not agree with one another until the end of time.
MrFubar: btw i do the same basic stuff as Rable but in smaller proportions as i'm not as much online or availible as him
Arame: Ah, cool - I know his because he keeps them up on the wiki Current Events page, and because he pushes them on E! regularly.
MrFubar: yes i know :)
Arame: He's also helped me by donating a lot of shrooms & such whenever I ask for them - but again, we're on similar time schedules!
Arame: One thing I would like to see different this tale is the forum. I'm fairly active on it, but it's really very empty. Maybe 10-20 regular users there.
MrFubar: yea i don't use the forum
MrFubar: it's all so time consuming
Arame: I hit the forum while I'm at work, gives me a nice break from avoiding work ;)
Arame: And I get my Egypt-fix in during the day, that way.
MrFubar: lol
MrFubar: well anyway, i have to go get some sleep
Arame: Ok, take care, and thanks again for your vote of confidence.
MrFubar: np at all, you deserve it
MrFubar: but should i put you up for KM? :p
MrFubar: or wait a bit longer :p
Arame: LOL
Arame zips his lips.
nunzia voted for Arame as Demi-Pharaoh.
