ShuoftheFieryHeat: As DP mediation is one aspect which can be complicated by cultural differences. Sometimes these differences are large (like a swastika CP) and sometimes they are small but create tension in the game. ShuoftheFieryHeat: When I first met BlueGrass I did not know he was from South Africa. ShuoftheFieryHeat: In the USA the word "bluegrass" has 2 specific meanings: ShuoftheFieryHeat: 1) it is a type of traditional music - noted for its harmonies and played on traditional instruments (guitar, fiddle, mandolin, banjo, bass) ShuoftheFieryHeat: 2) it is a type of grass. This grass is known to almost everyone who knows about horses. This grass grows in the State of Kentucy where the best race horses are raised. The horses that grow up eating this grass are some of the best race horses in the world. Kentucy is often refered to as The Bluegrass state. The latin name for this grass is: poa pratensis ShuoftheFieryHeat: When I first chatted with BlueGrass I thought he knew about both of these items since the name BlueGrass has a special meaning here. I refered to him as: poa pratensis. It was not until later that I found out that he was not from the USA and that he might not have realized that the title was a friendly one. ShuoftheFieryHeat: I would like to know how people would handle such a misunderstanding? And perhaps BlueGrass would be good enough to explain what his name means to someone in South Africa? Maybe it is a personal nickname and that is his perogative to use as he sees fit :) Reyzer: Unless a name, and we have had a few, is blatently rude to the majority of folks, I don't see a problem ShuoftheFieryHeat: oh there is no problem with the name - I just thought it might have a special meaning to him - which I would like to know about - I am not likely to be traveling to africa anytime soon so if it has a special meaning it would be nice to know about ShuoftheFieryHeat: in another round there was a discussion that names mean something different to different cultures ShuoftheFieryHeat: in that case the name used by one player was an honorific to someone from their history ShuoftheFieryHeat: but to another player that historical name was not associated with "good things" and that historical person was not considered "honorable" ShuoftheFieryHeat: I was aware of the historical person (not my culture) but I was not aware that to another culture that person was not considered a "good person" Reyzer: I suppose names can be so varied, and the origins of it diverse enough to not sit well with absolutely everyone
