Welcome to A Wiki in the Desert, a wiki for the Massively Multiplayer On-line Role-Playing Game [http://www.atitd.com A Tale in the Desert].

This wiki exists to document the game and to provide a community scratchpad for the players. You can find [[Guides]] on things such as growing Flax, an [[Atlas]] of interesting places, and various personal pages created by the [[Special:ListUsers | Users]] and [[Guilds]]. If you're looking to buy and sell, try [[Trading]]. Visit the [http://www.atitd.org/ community portal] for lots of info on current events, debates on the forums, or just random chatter. These links and many more can be found in the wiki sidebar to the left.

Anyone with an ATITD game account can edit any page on this site, but you have to first [[OpenID|log in]]. Please read the [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Contents user's guide] and information on [[Help:Formatting | formatting]] to see how to edit, and read our [[Policies]] before editing. Politics are not welcome (exception: [[Special:ListUsers | Users]] pages, but no personal attacks please) and, if you want to discuss something such as [[laws]], you'll find the [http://www.atitd.org/forum forums] more suitable. If you have any difficulties, please ask around in game or contact a [[A Tale in the Desert:Administrators|wiki admin]].

If you have a suggestion for how to improve the wiki software, please add it to the [[Server Improvements|Suggestions]] page. If you have a suggestion for improving the content, please just go ahead and do it! If you want to contribute but don't know how, start creating missing pages listed [[Special:WantedPages|here]], or verify the information in [[:Category:Unconfirmed|pages containing unchecked content copied from the T4 wiki]].

We also have a voice chat server set up for [[Mumble]].
=='''NEWS'''==
From: Pharaoh@talemail.net<br>

Citizens of Egypt,

I'm writing to announce the release of the final 5 Tests of A Tale in the Desert V, including an update of a Test not seen since our first Tale in the Desert, the Test of Astrological Alignment. In celebration of this, we'll also have a Welcome Back Weekend,<br>
starting: Friday, July 8, beginning at 12:00 Noon EDT (GMT-0400)

In the Test of Astrological Alignment, you perform a simple ritual at a Common Altar with one other priest. The ritual will reveal whether you are "aligned" with that other priest. The goal of the Test is to find a group of 5 priests, all aligned with each other.

Starting with this Tale, we'll be holding player gathering toward the end of the current Tale, rather than at the beginning of the next Tale. The Tale 5 gathering will take place in Pittsburgh next month:

August 19 - August 21, 2011

As is tradition, we are selling pet monkeys (with some new animations) in-game, for $75. Each monkey comes with one free admission to the Tale 5 Player Gathering.<br>

At the gathering you'll get a chance to meet fellow ATITD players in real-life, discuss Tests and Technologies for A Tale in the Desert VI, enjoy excellent food & beverages, and pet a real camel. Well, we'll see about the camel part. We are planning a Sunday trip to the Pittsburgh Zoo as part of the gathering.<br>

Hotel reservations can be made by calling the Wyndham University Place at 1-412-688-1982 and speaking to Josh McDaniel. Mention "ATITD" and give both your real name and character name.

Pittsburgh on the Nile,
Teppy (Pharaoh)
<!--
Please put a note (inside comment tags) with the removal date of each news item--one week after posting might be enough.

== Egypt-Wide Chat Channels ==
To chat with all Egypt in game, type '''/join egypt''' into the chat box.

To access '''BAZAAR''', a trading channel, type '''/join BAZAAR''' into the chat box.

To access a player run event and educational information channel, type '''/join speed'''. This channel is still getting up and running.

''All of these Channels are player run and, by design of the game developers, require a player to put each message sent to them through. Messages sent to these channels can take anywhere from a few seconds to a few hours to display, if posted at all, due to the design of the interface.''

''Please note that TFT (Troll Free Trades)has been closed. Please use BAZAAR for all trading''

== How to Log In ==
Note that only people with T5 accounts can log into and edit the wiki. Anyone can read the wiki without an account.

The ATitD wiki uses [[OpenID]] to manage login accounts, allowing you to use the same user name in the game, in the forums, and on the wiki without setting up additional accounts. You can find login instructions on the [[OpenID]] page.

'''If you have problems logging in, please come to #atitd-wiki in [http://atitd.org/irc/ IRC], or contact Nchanter or Rogarian in-game or by forum PM.'''

But don't make it one of those ones that you NEVER check, or what's the point?

== Information from Tale 4 ==
If you copy information directly from an old Tale, make sure you tag the page with the <nowiki>{{T4}}</nowiki> template so that it is clear that the information needs checking!

Also, as we clean up these pages please use {{5ok}} <nowiki>{{5ok}}</nowiki> to mark specific information as having been verified. Information that still needs to be verified should be marked with {{5}} <nowiki>{{5}}</nowiki>. Once all information has been marked with one of these, the T4 banner can be removed from the heading of the page, helping eliminate confusion. (See the [[Skills]] page for an example.)

Feyth: /* Passing the Test */

In this Worship test, the goal is to be part of a group of five people, all of whom are "astrologically aligned" with one another. All five people then pass the test simultaneously. Each member of the group must have passed the Initiation into Worship, and must not have already passed the Test of Astrological Alignment.

==Alignment==

"Alignment" is a quality shared (or not shared) between two people.

There is roughly a 1/3 chance that any given two people are aligned with each other.

Alignment (or lack thereof) is a separate quality for every pair: if Person A is aligned with Person B, and Person B is aligned with Person C, it is not necessarily true that Person A is aligned with Person C.

==Testing Alignment==
Alignment between two people can be determined by a simple ritual performed at a Common Altar:

*First person places a candle on the left pillar.
*First person places a candle on the left focus.
*Second person places a candle on the right focus.
*Second person places a candle on the right pillar.
*First person lights the candle on the left pillar.
*First person lights the candle on the left focus.
*Second person lights the candle on the right focus.
*Second person lights the candle on the right pillar.

After the ritual, each participant will receive a message. If they "have a feeling of emptiness", they are not aligned; if they "feel a connection", they are.

A person need not have passed the Initiation into Worship to check for alignment.

==Passing the Test==

Once a group of five coaligned people has assembled (i.e. each person in the group is aligned with the other four), they must visit a University of Worship, each carrying one medium quartz. One person must pay a medium quartz to start the group check for astrological alignment, the other four then verify alignment as a part of that group within a few minutes (also paying a medium quartz each). If the group is indeed coaligned, all five will then pass the test.

Here you can place who you are aligned with

Demonstration: Petition the University as a group from every Region (determined by your home location)

== Overview ==
In this test, you will attempt to form a large group (a coalition) that represents the views of all its players as best it can. Points are earned based on how accurately your group represents your views and how large the coalition is.

The test will run in week-long cycles, with the beginning of each cycle announced on the calendar. At the end of a cycle, the players with the most points pass the test.

== Basics ==

At the start of a cycle, you may visit any University of Leadership to acquire an agenda. This agenda consists of 14 planks (issues), and will list your stance and how important each plank is to you. Technically, this is actually the stances of your "constituents," which are essentially invisible NPCs that you represent (so don't get too bent out of shape if you disagree with the planks given to you).

Once given an agenda, you may join or start a coalition. The coalition has its own planks separate from your own. At the end of the cycle, you score points based on how well the coalition planks match up to your own.

After receiving an agenda, you may view it in your test menu.

== Agendas ==

Your agenda consists of the following 14 planks:

* Security vs. Freedom
* Environmental Protection vs. Economic Growth
* Freedom of Expression vs. Public Decency
* Achievement vs. Equality
* The Rule of Law vs. Judicial Temperance
* Freedom of Association vs. Inclusion
* Accountability vs. Privacy
* Common Good vs. Individuality
* Rehabilitation vs. Punishment
* National Unity vs. Local Sovereignty
* Rights of the Accused vs. Swift Justice
* Checks and Balances vs. Expediency
* Investment vs. Immediate Need
* Council of Elders vs. Trial by Jury

In addition, your constituents will feel more or less strongly about each plank. The following is a list of adjectives describing feelings, ordered from the strongest to weakest (as well as their point values):

* Ecstatic (+49)
* Thrilled (+36)
* Delighted (+25)
* Happy (+16)
* Pleased (+9)
* Satisfied (+4)
* Contented (+1)
* Ambivalent (0)

The following descriptors will only show up when looking at an agenda of a coalition (since it will be compared to your planks, and thus may run contrary):

* Hesitant (-1)
* Disconcerted (-4)
* Upset (-9)
* Unhappy (-16)
* Distressed (-25)
* Angry (-36)
* Furious (-49)

If the plank of a coalition matches your agenda, you gain the amount of points equal to the strength of the plank. If the plank of the coalition is opposite to your agenda, you lose the amount of points.

== Build Costs ==
===Coalition Headquarters===
Built in a [[Small Construction Site]].

You may start your own coalition by constructing a building. The costs are as follows:

* 500 [[requires::Bricks]]
* 200 [[requires::Boards]]
* 25 [[requires::Papyrus Paper]]
* 25 [[requires::Ink]]

Upon constructing a coalition, you become the leader of it. The leader of a coalition scores double the points.

As long as you are the only member of a coalition, you may freely change the planks of the coalition. If there are multiple people in a coalition however, only one plank may be changed every 24 hours, and no plank may be changed in the final 24 hours of a cycle.

Players may join a coalition at the coalition building (no approval is necessary). The leader of a coalition may close entry to a coalition for any reason (example: they want to set the initial planks freely before a second member joins). A coalition will have its own chat channel, and any new members or chances in planks will be announced on this channel.

You may view the agenda of any coalition at any time, whether or not you're a part of a coalition. Viewing the coalition agenda will also give you a report of what your score would be for joining the coalition at that time (note that the score is likely to change due to the fact that scoring is partially based on the number of members of the coalition).

You may only be a part of one coalition at a time. As long as you are not the leader, you can leave a coalition simply by joining another coalition or withdrawing from your current one at the building. If you are the leader, you must be the only one left in your coalition and you must tear down the building before you can join another.
== Scoring ==

Members of the seven coalitions with the most members at the end of the cycle score points (these are the "winning coalitions" for the purposes of principles). Scoring is divided into two parts: The individual component and the group component.

The individual component is determined by comparing the planks of your agenda to the planks of the coalition agenda, adjusted by the weight of each plank. This part of the score can range from -300 to 300.

The group component is simply the individual component multiplied by the number of members in the coalition. Note that only members with a positive individual score will count as members of the coalition. This rule also applies for determining the seven largest coalitions.

Finally, the leader of the coalition will score double the points.

== Passing ==

At the end of a cycle, the 14 players with the highest score pass. Points carry over between cycles.

Once you pass the test, you cannot participate again.

Demonstration: Petition the University as a group from every Region (determined by your home location)

== Overview ==

== Basics ==

== Agendas ==

Your agenda consists of the following 14 planks:

* Security vs. Freedom
* Environmental Protection vs. Economic Growth
* Freedom of Expression vs. Public Decency
* Achievement vs. Equality
* The Rule of Law vs. Judicial Temperance
* Freedom of Association vs. Inclusion
* Accountability vs. Privacy
* Common Good vs. Individuality
* Rehabilitation vs. Punishment
* National Unity vs. Local Sovereignty
* Rights of the Accused vs. Swift Justice
* Checks and Balances vs. Expediency
* Investment vs. Immediate Need
* Council of Elders vs. Trial by Jury

In addition, your constituents will feel more or less strongly about each plank. The following is a list of adjectives describing feelings, ordered from the strongest to weakest (as well as their point values):

* Ecstatic (+49)
* Thrilled (+36)
* Delighted (+25)
* Happy (+16)
* Pleased (+9)
* Satisfied (+4)
* Contented (+1)
* Ambivalent (0)

The following descriptors will only show up when looking at an agenda of a coalition (since it will be compared to your planks, and thus may run contrary):

* Hesitant (-1)
* Disconcerted (-4)
* Upset (-9)
* Unhappy (-16)
* Distressed (-25)
* Angry (-36)
* Furious (-49)

If the plank of a coalition matches your agenda, you gain the amount of points equal to the strength of the plank. If the plank of the coalition is opposite to your agenda, you lose the amount of points.

== Build Costs ==
===Coalition Headquarters===
Built in a [[Small Construction Site]].

You may start your own coalition by constructing a building. The costs are as follows:

* 500 [[requires::Bricks]]
* 200 [[requires::Boards]]
* 25 [[requires::Papyrus Paper]]
* 25 [[requires::Ink]]

== Scoring ==

== Passing ==

At the end of a cycle, the 14 players with the highest score pass. Points carry over between cycles.

Once you pass the test, you cannot participate again.

* 500 [[requires::Bricks]]
* 200 [[requires::Boards]]
* 25 [[requires::Papyrus Paper]]
* 25 [[requires::Ink]]

== Scoring ==

== Passing ==

At the end of a cycle, the 14 players with the highest score pass. Points carry over between cycles.

Once you pass the test, you cannot participate again.

For past passes, see See [[Test Pass History#Test of the Coalition|Test Pass History]].
