Gems are a product (or by-product) of Mining. There are seven known types -- diamond, emerald, quartz, ruby, sapphire, opal, and topaz -- with quartz being by far the most common. An individual Mine produces one type of gem, but the gems can be of any size.  The gem rate (how often a mine produces a gem) is specific to a mine, and is randomly determined when the mine is built.  The best gem rate possible seems to be a 1 in 6 chance of a gem each time the mine is worked.

If you tear down and rebuild a sand mine, it randomly resets the gem rate. Note that this will require additional materials to rebuild the mine, depending on your Salvage Techniques skill. Tearing down and rebuilding an ore (non-sand) mine does not affect the gem rate, as tearing down an ore mine does not completely destroy it (see the Mine page for more details).

Gems (and coal) are acquired when ore nodes in a mine are broken (by being used in 7 workloads). The size of the gem is random. There is some evidence to suggest that when more nodes are broken in the same workload, the gem sizes on average tend to be larger; however, it's still perfectly possible to pull a Huge gem without exploiting this (I have seen no evidence of this at all - Taemon the Mining Nut). Sand mines are thus valuable for gem mining, as it's easy to plan in such a way as to break 5+ nodes at once (assuming there are 5 different colors present in the field).  See the Sand Mining Guide for more detailed information.

Gems are distributed in 40x40 coordinate "blobs", with blob boundaries being divisible by 40So the square formed by (0,0) and (40, 40) forms one blob. (39, 39) would be in this blob, but (41, 39) would be in another. All mines dropped within a blob will yield the same gem type, with quantity varying by mine as explained above. All blobs will yield at least quartz. It is theorized that rarer gem types tend to cluster, so if one blob is producing ruby, check the neighboring blobs to look for topaz or emerald, for instance. The exact pattern of gem types isn't known, but it is theorized that some travel in "veins" like iron and copper, while others cluster in "mega blobs".

The quantity of the different sizes of gems you get seems to follow a 7 base, just like many other activities in the game.  So after mining 100 huge quartz, you would expect to have 700 large quartz, 4900 medium quartz, and 34300 small quartz.

This article is about the (non-cuttable) gems primarily produced from ore and sand mines. See also Cuttable Gems.

Gems are a product (or by-product) of Mining. There are seven known types -- diamond, emerald, quartz, ruby, sapphire, opal, and topaz. Every gem comes in one of four sizes: Small, Medium, Large, and Huge. An individual Mine will produce only one type of gem (determined by location), but the gems produced can be of any size. Naturally, the rarity increases with size.

Occasionally a Water Mine will cough up a gem, although they mainly generate cuttable gems.

Obtaining

Gems geographic distributions have changed since previous tellings. Though the boundaries have not yet been extensively explored, gems appear to correspond to regions.
