I got an onion seed on my very first planting (notable actions may have been picking mushrooms and getting a palm fromd, earlier). When I went to a different place some time later to plant again, I planted and realized I had forgotten my jugs, so had to let the onion go back to seed. When I had my jugs and replanted, I got a yield of 4 indicating I almost got another seed. I experimented with different waterings/shrinkages but only received the normal yield of 8. My very first planting was half-yield without duplicating a seed (4 in an 8 spot).  I was getting normal yields in concurrent tests up to and including when I tested by an ongoing dig and got normal yield there.  I gave up and tried again when I got home today in the same place I had originally gotten the half yield, and the first of the batch got half-yield again.  I've never seen a mushroom all telling and have never cooked, fished, or made a lure if that helps any. -LehmanHotep

Revision as of 20:18, 11 December 2011

I did the following over about 10 minutes without stopping for anything along the way aside from stashing wood/onions and filling my jugs:

  1. Grow 4 beds of onions, normal yield of 8/1 in this spot
  2. Harvest wood from the following trees
  3. Grow 4 beds of onions in the same place: the first gave 0/2, the second gave 4/1, the remainder gave 8/1
  • 15 Towering Palm
  • 15 Umbrella Palm
  • 7 Chicory
  • 7 Folded Birch
  • 5 Stout Palm
  • 5 Royal Palm
  • 5 Hawthorn
  • 4 Fern Palm
  • 4 Coconut Palm
  • 4 Passam
  • 3 Miniature Fern Palm
  • 2 Bramble Hedge
  • 2 Cinnar
  • 2 Ash Palm
  • 1 Blue Cerulean
  • 1 Spindle Tree

Reproduction Method:
Seem to be wood harvest. I have one tree that I get 2 seeds from and the onion production is 0.
More testing needs to be done on if it is only 1 tree in Egypt per avatar.

2 onions and 1 seed seem to be random. I think it is to give us a hint that is wood harvest.

Thanks to all that have helped with this project.

From multiple sources we can confirm that to reproduce seed you need to gather wood from a character specific tree some time past before harvesting an onion plant. It doesn't need to be the last tree gathered from. Also you can start plant the onion before collecting the wood and still get extra seed. What matters is when you harvest the onion.
Once you get an extra seed you need to gather from the tree again to get additional seeds.
There are several trees that work like these special trees but that instead gives half yield on harvest. Importance of these trees has not been found. It is probably just a clue to the correct seed reproduction method. Likely (but not confirmed) there are also multiple "magic" trees. -Sonea

It has been reported by two different sources that either foraging an herb, or collecting an insect, is the requirement for reproducing Onion Seeds.
It would appear that foraging/bugs are not related to onion seeds, please stop and take note of all objects around you when seeds are produced, particularly things like shrines, etc.
(It *does* seem to be related to player behavior rather than surroundings. I got a seed after running around, doing various things, then replanted again immediately in exactly the same manner, in exactly the same spot, and did not get a seed.)
