Guild Mission

To share enthusiasms, skills and knowledge. A multi-cultural place for the global community of Egyptians.

Why Southern Cross?

We swear by the Southern Cross to stand truly by each other and fight to defend our rights and liberties.

That oath was taken by hundreds of gold diggers at Ballarat in 1854 at the Eureka Stockade under the Southern Cross flag. The Eureka rebellion was Australia's one and only rebellion against colonial oppression. Although a military failure, it reinforced some enduring Australian cultural values like sticking up for your mates, and equality.

I imagine it went a bit like this...

A bunch of gold-diggers calling themselves the Ballarat Reform League yell at some uniformed British government officials...

"Hey mate, these mining licences are bloody too much! Give us a break, or we'll kick your dunny down." Crowd mutters angrily, waving the Eureka Flag and assorted munitions: "yeah", "shove over", "fair cop", "rum deal"

The NSW Regiment arrives at the double from the barracks down the road, forms up, lowers bayoneted rifles and advances on the motley crowd. Someone says "Umm, you know, they might have a point. It would be less paperwork."

The ramshackle army of miners was routed in about 10 minutes. Back in Melbourne the ring leaders were put on trial for high treason, but had massive public support. Ten thousand people came to hear the outcome. After about half an hour the jury said "not guilty", and the sudden gust of applause and jubilation spread out into the streets. Within 12 months, most of the demands of the Ballarat Reform League had been granted, including the right to vote, the repeal of mining taxes, the reduction of police numbers on the gold fields. The key ringleaders ended up as Members of Parliament.

So, on Australia Day 26 January every year we dream of telling old stories around the campfire, sharing a feed with mates and singing raucously as the sparks from the fire drift upwards.

Brothers and sisters under the stars.
