Why Southern Cross?
We swear by the Southern Cross to stand truly by each other and fight to defend our rights and liberties.
That oath was taken by hundreds of gold diggers at Ballarat in 1854 at the Eureka Stockade under the Southern Cross flag. The Eureka rebellion was Australia's one and only rebellion against colonial oppression. Although a military failure, it reinforced some enduring Australian cultural values like sticking up for your mates, and equality.
