I've struggled a lot with the making of gearboxes. I did find a guide from T3 (http://www.atitd.org/wiki/tale3/Users/EldradUlthran/Gearbox_Guide) and some explanations here: http://www.atitd.org/wiki/tale6/Gearbox_Design_Guide and http://www.atitd.org/wiki/tale6/Gearbox.
Still I kept having problems and mostly tried them on a trial/error basis, which most of the times got me frustated :) so eventually, when I did manage to make them, I tried to write this guide.
Step 1 - What do you need
- Gearbox Assembly Table
- Gearbox design tech
- a stash of Small Gears, Medium Gears, Large Gears
- wikipage for the gear ratio's: http://www.atitd.org/wiki/tale6/Gearbox_Ratios or you can use: http://www.atitd.org/wiki/tale6/Tamutnefret_Gearbox_Ratios
- patience :)
Step 2 - Different gearpairs
- spacer, used to start a new layer (no cost) - to represent it in the photo's I use: 1
- one step (photo) 3/3 only allows to move in a +-shape (cost=small gears):: [IMG][/IMG]
- diagonal (photo) 4/4 cheap
- 3/5, 5/3, 5/3, 3/5 makes a large change in ratio)(cost= medium gears)
- two steps up or sideways (photo) 5/6, 6/5, 4/7, 7/4 (makes smaller changes in ratio)(cost when using 7gear: large gears)
- knight's move (photo) 6/6, 5/7, 7/5
- 4/4 is much cheaper then 6/6 , although with 6/6 you move over large distances
- 3/3, 4/4, 6/6 makes no change in ratio (photo)
- 3/5, 5/6, 4/7 makes the ratio go up (photo)
- 5/3, 6/5, 7/4, 7/5 makes the ratio go down (photo)
Step 3 - Useful to know
- you always start at 1A, ratio 100
- 8 rows, 8 columns
- you always need to end at row 8
- only 30 shafts can be used - including spacers????
- no more then 3 layers are possible
- always put the smallest gear on the bottom, ex: spacer, 3-gear, 5-gear on top of each other, not spacer, 5-gear, 3-gear
- only 3/3, 4/4, 3/5, 5/3, 5/6, 6/5, 6/6, 4/7, 7/4, 5/7, 7/5 pairs can be used
Step 4 - Example of a 1-output gearbox
- used for cartouche and the 1st box used in Stone Quarry
- let's make gearbox: D160-175
- check the ratiopage: http://www.atitd.org/wiki/tale6/Gearbox_Ratios or you can use: http://www.atitd.org/wiki/tale6/Tamutnefret_Gearbox_Ratios
- here we see the possible ratios: photo below: black square
- we need the one with the lowest cost: photo below:red square
[IMG][/IMG]
- photo's from the board using the cheap 4/4 gears
[IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG]
- photo's from the board using the expensive 6/6 gears - this one is for E160-175
[IMG][/IMG]
Step 5 - Example of a 2-output gearbox
- used for Springbox, and the 2nd gearbox in Stone Quarry
- let's make gearbox: B100-125 D320-382
- check the ratiopage: http://www.atitd.org/wiki/tale6/Gearbox_Ratios or you can use: http://www.atitd.org/wiki/tale6/Tamutnefret_Gearbox_Ratios
- look for ratio's that are used for both
- here we see the possible ratios: photo (black square)
- start looking for shared ratio's, preferably at the start!!! then possibly with lowest cost, if there is still choice - photo: red square
[IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG]
- photo's from the board
[IMG][/IMG]
== Step 6 - Example of a 3-output gearbox == (not finished yet)
- used for Test of Dancing Waters, the dancing waters mechanism
- let's make gearbox: B240-280 E175-205 H322-375
- check the ratiopage: http://www.atitd.org/wiki/tale6/Gearbox_Ratios or you can use: http://www.atitd.org/wiki/tale6/Tamutnefret_Gearbox_Ratios
- look for ratio's that are used for all 3 of them
- here we see the possible ratios: photo (black square)
- we need the ones that are shared by all 3 and then if there is still choice, the lowest cost possible
- [IMG][/IMG]
- photo's from the board
- end result:
Step 7 - Final
- you'll get a message if your gearbox is not good
- either your gears don't mesh :: [IMG][/IMG]
- either you don't have an output in row 8 :: [IMG][/IMG]
- either you have used up your 30 shafts
- also on top of your board you'll see if your gearbox has the correct ratio
- when your gearbox is ok, then you'll get a popup window: "do you want to make this gearbox .....?"
I hope this guide makes making gearboxes a bit more easier.
