OE07
Calico, Dry, Smelly
This page serves as a repository of research notes on Toxin OE07, the seventh mutagen unlocked in Old Egypt by Renard. It uses 6 Calico, Dry, Smelly (Negative to Fuzzy Mottled Slimy) moss and 5 Bleeding Hand, 7 Colt Foot, 6 Nefertari's Crown, 2 Pool of Tranquility, 6 Scorpion Brood mushrooms.
First mutation test: L-Vampire R-Silken
The Vampire outer stamen has lost some magenta, no change is visible on the Silken.
Second mutation test: L-Silken R-Vampire
No change is visible on the silken, the vampire outer stamen has had an IO (Magenta) allele replaced with IY (Yellow). Hence, on the left splint, the affected gene is somewhat left of center.
Discussion and next step
The second test is enough to indicate that either gene 5 or gene 6 was affected on the left splint in the first round of tests. The right splint is still ambiguous.
Not much to go on yet, so that brings us to the standby: Delicate-Fracture double cross.
Third mutation test: L-Delicate R-Fracture
Delicate has lost some yellow from its outer stamen, and Fracture has lost the color from its leaves. The right splint is now known to affect a gene rather far to the right.
Fourth mutation test: L-Fracture R-Delicate
Fracture is now double giant, and Delicate is normal size. We know from previous tests that on the left splint, the gene affected is left of center. Since the giant was disrupted but not one of the dwarf alleles, we know that gene 9 must have been affected. This allows us to identify the left gene affected on all lilies.
Left-Fracture 9(Y)
Left-Silken 9(Y)
Left-Vampire 6(O)
Left-Delicate 8(Y)
Discussion and next step
Knowing that the right splint hits so far to the right, and a Y is taken from Silken on the left splint tells us that it was the O from gene 10 or 12 from Vampire that was removed.
Right-Vampire 10 or 12(O)
The range on Silken is now from 14-18. However, 17 and 18 can be eliminated since otherwise color would have been visible on Silken's stamen in the second test.
Given the effects on fracture, the genes can be further narrowed to 15 and 16.
On Delicate, since we know that a Y which followed I was transferred and color in the outer stamen was lost but not replaced, it must be gene 15.
Right-Silken 15(U)
Right-Fracture 15(G)
Though the range on Delicate is genes 13-14, since a Y was taken from Fracture on the left splint, we know that it wasn't 14 affected.
Right-Silken 13(G)
Where does that lead us next?
Morning: IRRR IYYY IYYY UYYY UYYY UROR UROR GRRR GYYY GORR GRRO
Left Splint: 20-22
Right Splint: 35-36
That's a fairly difficult range.
Clarity: IRIR IOIO IYIY GORR GROR GRRO GORR GROR GRRO
Left Splint: 17-18
Right Splint: 29-30
Left-Morning Right-Clarity looks very informative.
Left-Clarity Right-Morning looks much less useful, so we'll stick to one test for now.
Fifth mutation test: L-Morning R-Clarity
Morning has lost Yellow-West, Clarity has lost Magenta-North.
Either the R and G were swapped, or the U and R were swapped.
Discussion and next step
Can we work with Dusk or Crimson?
Dusk: GROR GORR UYYY GYOR IY GRRO IYYY GRRO GORR GROR ROYG IO GROR IOOO IYY IY URRR GRRO GORR UOOO
Left splint: 34-37
Right splint: 57-60
Putting an O onto the right splint would be oddly informative.
Sixth mutation test: L-Vampire R-Dusk
An O from Vampire has been replaced by an R. Dusk's outer stamen is now red instead of orange.
Right-Dusk 57 (Y)
Discussion and next step
Now for the left splint of dusk
Dusk: GROR GORR UYYY GYOR IY GRRO IYYY GRRO GORR GROR ROYG IO GROR IOOO IYY IY URRR GRRO GORR UOOO
Left splint: 34-37
Energy: Energy VVVVV UYYY UYYY GYYY GYYY GRRO GRRO UROR UROR VVVVV
Right splint: 33
Left-Dusk Right-Energy might work.
Seventh mutation test: L-Dusk R-Energy
Dusk has lost North-Magenta, Energy has lost West-Yellow
Left-Dusk 35(G) or 37(O)
Right-Energy 33(R)
Discussion and next step
Due to erroneous testing before, I had crossed a crimson with itself. As it happens, at this point the gene affected on crimson is known to be 83.
Eighth mutation test: L-Crimson R-Crimson
Both lilies were unchanged. This can only have happened if gene 83 replaced gene 51.
Discussion and next step
This narrows down the range on Dusk to genes 35 and 36. Since an R was removed from energy, it must be:
Left-Dusk 35 (G)
CUTOFF
Progress has been made on narrowing the splint ranges. Back to Crimson:
Crimson (Starting from gene 47): UROR GOOO GOOO GOOO GYYY GYYY GYYY GROR GROR GROR GROR GRRO GRRO GRRO GRRO
Left splint: 48-53
Right splint: 83
That's much easier to work with, we can even cross Crimson with itself and know at least what gene was affected on the left splint.
Seventh mutation test: L-Crimson R-Crimson
No change to either flower.
Left-Crimson 50 R
Right-Crimson 93 R
That narrows down the ranges enough that testing is complete.
