Demi-Pharaoh Results:

For this debate we are going to try something a bit different.

The Debate will occur over Friday and Saturday June 7 and 8 June.

The core questions have been posted below. Each candidate will post their answers and counter-arguments here. The call for questions will be made over L2PBS each day, and are to be submitted to /chat cate.

This way we can coordinate across almost 18hrs of time difference and give both our keen contestants the opportunity to state their claims! And you, our wonderful Egyptians, can check what's going on at your leisure.

so, cue the fanfare...and let's get the party started!

Debate between Bramwell and Hounddog June 2013

cate: Welcome to our newest DP debate!

If you have any questions, please feel free to post it directly here - why not? And if you're not sure how to use the wiki, just /chat cate and I'll look after that bit for you...

cate: The first question is always the ice-breaker...

FIRST QUESTION Can you share a little about yourself, what you enjoy about ATITD as well as how long you have been playing?

Hounddog: About myself: i was introduced to the game in middle of T2 and from there i made alot of great friends, who taught me alot about the game,I did miss some of t4 and T5 do to a shoulder operation, i enjoy building stuff, and helpping others that need or ask, i'm a quiet person i don't talk alot but if someone needs help or ask for something i'm glad to give it to them and i never ask for anything in trade....

Bramwell: I played T2 and T3 and I was in the Sunset Pond area of Old Egypt. I did not play T4 or T5. In T6 I am located in River Plains, and most of my work is done at Palm Valley. I've grown up in cities, and so I like the rural, agrarian feel of ATITD. I try to treat it like a small community where everyone knows everyone, and where everything is at least semi-public. I enjoy the logical process of working through all of the crafting steps in order to accomplish a goal, and I enjoy the fact that socializing is an actual part of the game. I try to get to know people as well as I can, and I try to help whenever I am able. I like to do in-game projects that allow me to still chat, and so I tend to like puzzles and resource-gathering and I tend to dislike the tasks that involve constantly-monitored timers or temperatures.

SECOND QUESTION If you win this election you will pass the test of the Demi-Pharaoh and be our 19th DP of this tale. What will you do differently once you have the role?

Hounddog: Because I'll have the responsibility of banning, I'll talk to senior DPs when something comes up. Or a GM if nobody is available..

Bramwell: When someone is elected Demi-Pharaoh, only two things change. First, they obtain the power to ban. Second, they receive more requests for help, assistance, or guidance than the average player. With respect to the power to ban, the only change I would make would be to change my password more often. I would not allow anyone else access to my account because that is the only way to ensure that the ban power is not misused. With respect to requests for help, assistance, or guidance, I would welcome more of those. I really like the social aspect of ATITD, and I do my best to help whenever I am asked. I have learned everything through the help of others, and I continue to learn new aspects of the game from others, and so I try my best to pass along the information I have to anyone who needs it.

THIRD QUESTION: Have you seen any bannable behaviour? What would be your approach?

Bramwell: I have not personally witnessed any behaviour in this tale that I would consider bannable. In my view, there are very few situations where a ban would be clearly and immediately appropriate. Flooding of public channels with racism or sexism would be examples that I would consider bannable. My approach would be to simply inform the person of three things: 1) I think the behaviour, if continued, calls for banning; 2) I, as a Demi-Pharaoh have the power to issue that ban; and 3) the ban is permanent and real. I would then counsel with the other Demi-Pharaohs online at the time and we would make a group decision. I believe that griefing should also be a bannable offense, but I think that it is only appropriate where it appears that the offender intended to grief, and was not just being oblivious.

Hounddog: No I have not but have seen the after maths of what a person has done and we all know him as Geodude need I say more..

FOURTH QUESTION How are you providing leadership in the game and amongst the player base?

Bramwell: I tend to lead by example. Leadership, to me, is not about getting some large project built. Everyone wants to build the large projects because everyone benefits in the form of a principle, a test pass, or some other benefit. As such, people join these builds out of self-interest and not as a result of the person leading the project. I lead by providing an example of behavior that is pleasant, helpful, sociable, and positive. I try to never be offensive, but I also try to never take offense, because that can be just as bad.

Hounddog: here we go, i'm not one for telling ppl what to do but if you ask me to do something that I can do, I like more of doing stuff to keep me busy then telling what is needed...

FIFTH QUESTION: What question would you like to be asked, and why?

Bramwell: I actually would like people to ask what we do in our real lives. The unique aspect of the ban power is that it has a real world effect with respect to billing issues. Everyone has the right to keep their real life completely secret and separate from life in ATITD. But, I also think that the voters have the right to ask Demi-Pharaoh candidates questions about their real lives, because the ban power can have in impact outside of the game world.

Hounddog: How did my compound turn out to look so nice, my game wife had a lot to do with that she is great deco..

SIXTH QUESTION: What would you do if you found out someone else had accessed your account and used your ban powers? (Note: Spouselog does not allow access to DP Ban powers.)

Bramwell: First let me say that I will do everything in my power to prevent this from happening. That being said, if someone actually accessed my account and actually used my ban powers I would take the following steps: 1) I would announce the fact in-game on public channels, 2) I would notify the Demi-Pharaohs, 3) I would notify the GMs, 4) I would leave it to the GMs to determine whether they would notify Teppy. Notice that these are all notice steps and not action steps. The test and the power are intended to have potential effects in the real world. This means that if this scenario occurs, it is not a glitch. It is a potentiality and a risk that is built into the test. The best I can do in the real world would be to offer to compensate the banned player by paying for a new account. But the reality is that if the ban power gets out and gets used inappropriately, that is not a problem for Teppy. It is a problem for the Demi-Pharaoh to determine how to prevent it, but the fallout would be determined by the community, and not by the developer.

Hounddog: Number 1 no one can access my acct: I try to change my password often, and a problem did arise I would let a GM know as for a quick phone call to teppy so he know of the problem..

SEVENTH QUESTION: Would you rather be a pirate or a ninja, and why?

Bramwell: I'd rather be a pirate, but one of those happy pirates that don't actually kill people. The kind of pirate that drinks rum and throws parties and says 'Arrrr' alot but doesn't actually do any harm. Ninjas are cool but I think of them as assassins. I just can't imagine what goes on at a ninja party, but I am almost certain that pirates have fun when they get together. : )

Hounddog:ninja: cause that's more what I am you ask for something i'll show up give you what u ask for and vanish home....

AUDIENCE QUESTION 1: Anonymous by 'listener' request: What specifically have you done to further the growth of the community?

Bramwell: Thank you for asking this question. It's been said that we can view ATITD as either a sandbox or a pyramid scheme, depending on how much emphasis we put on the tests. I personally take the sandbox view of Egypt, and so my goal is for Egypt to be a pleasant and relaxing place. I try to encourage this through my interactions with individuals in the community. I have not been the primary mover in any of the great public works projects, and I have not given anyone instructions on what to gather or what to build for the benefit of a community project. Rather, I specifically try to further the growth of the community on an individual by individual basis, and in the most pleasant way possible. My hope is to make an individual offer to help, and my hope is to make this offer to every single person I meet. If everyone followed that example, the community would be even stronger than it already is.

Hounddog "I help open technologies at the Uni and am in contact with guild leaders to help them with building projects.

FINAL CANDIDATE STATEMENT: Let's tell Egypt what they will get in a DP by voting for you.

Hounddog: What you will get from me as DP is that I will be here. If I need to stop playing, I will let someone know.

Bramwell: I thank you for taking the time to read these statements and I appreciate the support you can give me. If I were elected Demi-Pharaoh, Egypt would get a person who is thoughtful, helpful, and even-keeled. You will get nothing but positive support and problem solving from me. In a game that can get dramatic at times, I do my best to calm situations rather than inflame them, and I think that is the best thing for the success, continued happiness, and continued participation and membership in the game. Thank you again for your support.

cate: And that's it for now. Thank you to the candidates for coming out and to you, the audience.

There is, however, one last thing to do - and that is to head on out and get your votes cast for the next DemiPharaoh!
