The sweeper is the function of the game code that causes resources left on the ground to disappear after a while. It keeps the landscape (and the server) from being cluttered with dropped junk.
observation: dropped things where still there after 1h, not there anymore before 1h 20 min
Buildings and resources stored in buildings are not subject to the sweeper, so if you want to mark a particular spot on the ground, a good medium-term solution is to build a small, cheap building there (e.g. a Bonfire with 1 wood).
For a cheap building to store items outside of a compound, build a Storage Basket.
