The Desert Obelisk is the first obelisk type available to the people of Egypt. It is built to pass the Test of the Obelisk (or the principle thereof), or simply for decoration.
As with all obelisks, it is built in a Small Construction Site, where the builder defines the size of the obelisk-to-be in cubits. The taller the obelisk, the greater the material requirements.
Source
This building becomes available when you learn the Obelisk Construction 1 tech. You must also have started the Test of the Obelisk.
*Note that this tech CANNOT be taught. You must learn it from the University.
The Queue
You can see the links to all the queues on the Test of the Obelisk page.
Time Required To Hold Power
7 Egyptian days = approximately 2 days, 8 hours real time. Please confirm the previous obelisk has passed prior to building yours!
Note: Time seems to vary considerably (Teppy time?); Manu's obelisk was built on 31/12 15:55GMT and had yet to pass on 3/1 4:55GMT (2 days, 13 hours real time); it had passed when we logged in on 3/1 11:40AM

Projected formulas
- Bricks: x*x*2 + x*19
- Boards: x*x/5 + x*2
- Slate: x*x/23 + x/2
- Dried Flax: x*x/17 + x/5
- Clay: x*x/15 + x*3
- Linen: x*x/51 + x
- Flint: x*x/45 + x/8
Warning: Rounding on these is weird. They mostly round down each part (either side of the +), but sometimes you end up with 1 extra.
