University Text

Design an Empty Hand Puzzle, and invite others to solve your creation. They will rate your puzzle on how clever and satisfying the solution is. Remember that only people who actually solve it will qualify as judges.

Overview

The Test of Empty Hand is the sixth test in the discipline of Thought. This was originally designed to be a done as a group effort and is probably the most expensive of all the thought challenges.

Passing the Principle

Build, design and open an Empty Hand Puzzle for judging OR solve 3 recent winning puzzles.

Solving a Puzzle

We no longer have a 'learning mode' option, so here is an attempt to explain how to play an Empty Hand puzzle.

  1. When you start the puzzle, the top line shows what blocks you start with. There are arrow options to the left (<<) and to the right (>>). Sliding the blocks in either direction lets you position them on the track to the HOME position.
  1. Transformations are the steps shown below the top line. These let you change one group of blocks to a different group of blocks. When you hit play, the display area in the bottom section shows all seven possible transformations that can ever occur.
  1. Find the END TRANSFORMATION below that changes a group of blocks to nothing. That is your final goal. You win by getting rid of all blocks.
  1. Now you have to figure out a way to change the starter group of blocks to the END TRANSFORMATION group. This usually takes 4 or 5 steps.
  1. A transformation only works if the pieces starting from the HOME position match one of the options in the display area.
  1. Don't forget to claim your win in the upper left corner!

Passing the Test

Two people can pass each week. See Test Pass History or http://julianatdeltona.com/atitd/passedtests.aspx.
