The study of hieroglyphics: [5]

The Rosetta stone is a fragment of an engraved stele of ancient Egypt measuring 112.3 x 75.7 cm, bearing three versions of the same text that enabled the deciphering of hieroglyphics by J. F. Champollion in the 19th century. The inscription that it contains is a decree promulgated in Memphis by the pharaoh Ptolemy V in 196 before our era. The decree is written in two languages: ancient Egyptian and ancient Greek, and three scriptures: Egyptian hieroglyphic, demotic and Greek alphabet.
