Observations
- It would appear that adding herbs change the scent and increase the quality
- Adding resin reduces quality and nudges the stats in a certain direction
More Observations:
- Adding herbs can increase or decrease the quality.
- Adding resins can increase or decrease the quality.
- Resins have potential to reduce the quality significantly.
- However, repeated use of the same resin or herb will eventually cause quality to increase.
- Repeated use of the same resin can cause one or both stats to change.
- Incense scents (five times fast, people!) exist on a linear axis that goes: Musk -> Flowers -> Pine -> Citrus -> Clove
- It's *much* easier to trend your scents toward Clove than toward Musk. (As a result, I am inclined to think of this as some sort of quality scale, with Musk being highest and Clove lowest quality)
- I have not yet observed the nature of the boost changing: It always seems to stay hopeful, serene, etc. (Could this be a constant?)

Wild theories
Since I don't see much posted, I thought I'd maybe go ahead and throw my early ideas up here to spark discussion today and for future generations to ridicule.
Resin Clock theory:
Imagine the current state of your incense to be represented by an analog clock, complete with hour and minute hands.
- Stats are mapped along the edge of the clock in (possibly equal) sections. For example, Str might occupy the area between 12:00 and 2:00, Dex between 2:00 and 5:00, etc.
- The current positive and negative stats are indicated by the section the clock's hands are pointing to. For example, suppose the minute hand is at 1:00 and the hour hand is at 3:00, you might have a +str -dex incense.
- Each resin has a point on the clock where, when added to the incense, it exerts an influence on the hour and/or the minute hand.
- Resins whose influence put stress on the hands of the clock, by pulling them in directions counter to the ones in which they're already pointing, will diminish the quality of the resin proportionate to the stress they place. For example, let's say I apply Umbrella Palm resin, which attracts the hands toward a point in the 7:00 section of the face. The hands are pointing in the opposite direction, stressing the hands and diminishing the incense's quality significantly.
- Resins whose influence reinforce the current directions will have a positive impact on quality.
- Repeated application of resins causes the hands to shift and, eventually, to have a positive impact on the quality.
(I would put this in, but not really sure where it fits, and not really comfortable restructuring things. So, on the talk page it goes, and if someone more experienced wants to move this over, cool. If not, embarrassment is somewhat limited ;))

Adding to the wild theories :)
- theory 1 resin has a set +- stat affect
- theory 2 resin has a max ql , which perhaps differs depending on incenses flavour(citrus, clove etc)
- theory 3 adding resin to incense with different stats from resins set stats(T1) will lower QL until a point where the stats of new resin will take over and then continual additions will increase QL to resins max- additions ove rthis start to decay QL through dilution of the incense.
- current goals
- 1/ find stats on each resin- testing T1
- 2/ find max ql for each resin testing T2- compare with different flavours if T2 holds
- 3/ find a way to increase cactus and resin herb stores to continue research
NB I did see differing value for adjective serene constitution- for the life of me I cant remeber what it was and had assumed at time there was no difference also and didnt take note- only realising later it said ------- constitution( i am taking better notes now and hope to expand this soon)- update found it was hopeful constitution Ive seen on a citrus incense once

Smells Good Inc. is build, GH is located at 1428,1750 in Shabat Ab. -Mudkest
NOTE: The following is the old contents of the Guides/Incense page, before it was replaced by the new guide.
Basic Information
Incense is created in a Scent Lab using Cactus Sap, Charcoal, and perhaps some additives (herbs, Rose of Ra petals, and Resin of various types). One needs an Incense Prong in order to cut in additives. It can be burned in an Incense Burner, and when one stands near enough to "catch a whiff", it will affect some small and temporary changes to one's stats depending on type and quality. How long its effects last is dependent on its quality (the higher, the better). Incense was used in T2 in the Discipline of Worship (Humble Priest) and in the Worship Monument.
Please note: Incense is not a substantial source for stat bonuses. +1 to a single stat for a few minutes is likely the best you'll be able to get. If you're looking for ways to increase your stats, try Cooking for temporary gains or Tests for some permanent gains.
Incense has been changed to be (semi) useful. +/- 7 is now (theoretically) possible for a decent(ish) amount of time. It stacks with other food. Portable burners are on the to-do list apparently.
Making a Batch of Incense
Stand at a Scent Lab with 20 Cactus Sap, 4 Charcoal, an Incense Prong, and any additives you desire, and click "Start a Batch of Incense." A random type of incense will be generated, and you can see what its stats are by clicking "Burn a little pinch of the mixture" and looking at the report in your Main channel. If you are satisfied, you can remove the incense. One batch = 20 deben.
Burning Incense
Incense is burned in a Windproof Incense Burner or a Incense Burner.
Higher quality incense burns longer on an incense burner.
Manipulating Incense Stats
If you would like to try to alter the stats of the batch, you'll need herbs, resins, or Rose of Ra petals.
* Herbs affect the scent of the incense. * Resins affect the positive and negative attributes of the incense. * Petals affect the feeling of the incense (per T3 testing).
You can add these things to the batch one deben at a time. Most of the changes that a particular additive will contribute seem to occur within the first 20 adds, and each time you add, the quality of the batch will be altered a bit. You can note these changes by using the 'Burn a pinch' option on the Scent Lab as you add things.
It is theoretically possible to reach any desired combination of incense stats with the proper combination of additives. At this time, we're still researching how to manipulate each random start to achieve a given result. You can contribute to this effort by adding your test data to the appropriate link(s) above. If you are seeking a particular type of incense, you can check those links for likely "recipes," or you can contact individual makers (see the bottom of the page).
Observations
There are five bits of important information for every type of incense created: quality, scent, feeling, positive attribute, and negative attribute. These can be observed while the incense is still in the lab by using the 'Burn a little pinch of the mixture' option, and observing the report in your Main channel:
"You catch a whiff of quality 353 Sandalwood scented incense. You are filled
with a melancholious dexterity, yet a bit of fragility."
In the above example, the feeling is melancholious, the positive attribute is dexterity, and the negative attribute is fragility.
Incense seems to have a map of possible combinations (similar to the chime map)...probably three maps, in actuality - one each for scents, feelings, and attributes. There are a number of possible random starts. There seems to be a "destination" for each additive, and the additives seem to determine quality and direction of travel on their maps. Though it is possible to end up with zero quality, it is also possible to rescue a batch that has fallen below zero with the proper additive(s). Quality doesn't seem to be a simple multiplier; it's probably a function of map location and additive type.
Stats stack with grilled food and kitchen foods. Over 500 quality seems to give +2 stats. Some incense will change type of stat by adding resin, especially a different resin. Mixing the same resin/herb doesn't seem to give the same stats. ~Hanid

From this we can deduce that incense has some form of co-ordinate system, but it doesn't seem to be a simple +/- system.
