Clay is a fundamental and common resource in Egypt. It is gathered from clay patches found throughout the map. Look for terrain, often close to water, where the ground is cracked. A "clay" action icon appears in the corner of your screen when you are standing on a clay patch.

To gather clay, click on the "clay" icon while holding at least one water in jugs. (The image of the shovel in the icon is misleading; you do not need a shovel.)

Each time you gather clay, you will empty one of your water jugs. You cannot gather clay in the same spot twice consecutively, so after you gather clay, move a little bit until you see the "clay" icon again. To refill your jugs with water move to the edge of water and you will see a new blue icon in the corner of the game window (screen) that looks like a jug pouring water. Click that icon and you will be asked how many. Enter in a number or click "max" and the jug(s) turn(s) into a "water in jugs".

About 10% of the time, gathering clay will also get you a piece of flint.

Special Note

Do not lose your last jug if possible.

Note that when learning Pottery from the School of Thought, the new immigrant will be given one starting jug, from which they can obtain the clay needed for more jugs.
