ATITD Life
I was a founding member of Good Intentions and Jabal Al-Lawz, along with multiple smaller guilds, during T3. When T4 came along, I decided to step down from leading the somethingawful.com people for awhile and focus on the general ATITD public. Zero-Development Zones
I pledge to support and protect Zero-Development Zones arranged by any public-works guild in any region, provided that the ZDZ is marked off by at least one sign and a sculpture that can mark its boundaries. Any such ZDZ's boundaries may not be larger than a 49-sector square Compound, and its protection extends to 100 coordinates in all directions. Any player that knowingly places a polluting structure within this zone of protection may face consequences from myself. Note that this policy is a temporary one, until law can be put in place to protect public land from pollutants.
Griefing
In online gaming, someone who takes pleasure in creating grief for an opponent via various "cheap" tactics.
Using that definition of griefing, I pledge to protect peaceful contributors to Egyptian society from their detractors. In the course of any dispute brought to my attention, the offending players will have one chance to "make right" before the opportunity will be lost and passed to me. It's impossible to write down a list of situations and how I would react to each of them, and I ask that fellow players send me a message in-game if they need additional clarification on my policies regarding griefing.
Questions from the ATITD.org Forums
Please give one or more specific examples for why you would ban someone.
I would be happy to answer this question, submitted by Vulpine in this thread. Banishment from the game is a very serious step in dispute resolution, being the absolute last resort. Let's paint a quick picture; Player A will be played by Jim, and Player B will be John. John has a quiet little compound on a pond in the desert. This little compound happens to be on top of a titanium vein. Jim comes along when John is not online, finds the vein and recalls that he needs titanium urgently. Rather than wait and risk losing his spot on the vein, Jim drops the mine and happily wanders off to take a nap. John logs on, freaks out, and turns to E! to call Jim a griefer. Now, here's where SouperGrrl the Demi-Pharaoh steps in. John gets asked to wait for Jim to log on, and (in the meantime) provides his side of the story. Jim logs on an hour later and is asked to provide his side of the story. SouperGrrl asks both parties to resolve the dispute peacefully, and gives them thirty minutes to do so. Now, either Jim and John figure out some way of sharing the mine, moving the compound, moving the mine, or paying one another off or they will probably both be banned. John, for defamation of character, though if he makes an honest effort to negotiate, he will likely be safe. Jim, for failing to provide space and due consideration to residents in the course of industrial advancement. Both players have failed to contribute to a harmonious Egypt. In this example, Jim could have placed a sign, reserving the vein for future development and asking for any residents to step forward. John could have waited for Jim and patiently explained his position and attempted to resolve the issue independently.
It may seem harsh. However, this is a social game. Merely working together with those who are your friends is not enough - we must unite as a community and face the coming challenges that the development team has planned for us. There must be a common respect, because every player is a potential contributor and concerted efforts to shut out those potential contributors may very well do serious damage.
Really Fast Summary
In Case You Hate To Read
Look, I fully support harsh and decisive action when it comes to griefing. There are two things you can do with griefers - ignore them, or deal with them. Whining in E!, saying bad things about them, or otherwise standing around with your thumb up your butt isn't going to do anything. My policies towards them, therefore, are harsh and decisive. If you don't like that, don't vote for me. If you do, feel free to support my campaign.
As for the rest of my campaign, I fully support public works programs of all kinds. Most of my policies are geared towards lessening the burden of such programs and supporting publicly-minded players in their endeavors to improve Egypt.
