- This is basically a word for word copy with very little copyediting from what I said in the DP channel. There is of course my usual bad grammer in spots ;) As this is a wiki feel free to fix things if you see anything that bothers you or let me know and I will :). I'll add anything else substantial and mark it as a separate thing.
In general I see a DP as someone who can help make the game better for everyone else. Hopefully they should be someone who enjoys doing that (who enjoys making things "go well" ) because I think in general they often end up putting some of what they would want to do on the back burner when issues :) As I said earlier I generally see the use of any "action" as preventive rather then punitve. To me banning someone (or jailing them) just to "punish" is rarely helpful. That does not mean it can't be used to stop a problem that continues or to put a stop to an on going issue.
It is one of the things I like about the "arrest" deal in my law that we were talking about earlier. Basically a way to say "freeze! let's talk this out because I find that you usually can. I am also a fan of using temp bans when at all possible instead of permenant ones (still with the idea that a ban is a last resort)
at least for 1 type of issue:
I think there are 2 broad catagories of people that can be a problem.
1 is the sterotypical "griefer" who is trying to upset people. These people exist but they are much rarer. I'll be honest when I say I put geodude under this category at first but after talking to him at length I'm not totally sure he belonged there (at least fully) he was still a problem but wasn't the complete griefer then I originally thought the 2nd type is the one that is much much more common and is generally a player who's upset and the key word there is "player" in the way that it is someone who actually wants to play this game, who wants to pass tests/lvl/do whatever. Those situations are usually the most difficult but they are also the ones that in the end can almost always be solved without a permenant ban (unless you screw up somehow along the way). Why? Because they want to play, they can be reasoned with and worked with and usually in the end neither party is totally without fault.
I think a DP needs to be able to listen and mediate first and foremost. They may at times be asked to make a decision because both parties would prefer a 3rd party to do it (or because 1 or the other basically forces it) but usually the most workable end result comes about because the parties agree to it in the end and someone can help barter that. Mediateing and listening can of course include "ideas" on how to end it amicably as well but it is better if they come to the same conclusion :)
I must admit I am very glad to here Riva talk about how Teppy will ban someone who has been banned twice by a DP. That is great to hear (as much as I doubt it will be necessary often if ever).
I think those who have listened in since Orishas was elected have noticed that people do indeed call for a DP when they have concerns and disputes even when no one really thinks a ban would be even close to in order and while yes almost all the "dispute resolution" could be done without being DP I think the argument I hear often in first rounds about a DP not being important is a little bit BS. They end up with as close to a community mandate as you can get here and I think in general we all want people to help be that 3rd party.
well.. that's basically what I have time for now lol I may have to explain a bit more about who I am later on ;)
I can tend to talk to much so always feel free to let me know if I'm repeating myself ;)
