Originally from the Bastet server, I transfered to Tale 5 only a few months ago with some friends. (Now we form the Bastet Hounds Guild). My primary passion in Egypt is glassblowing and glassmaking. I also enjoy the Test of Pyrotechnics, Thought puzzles, and crossbreeding flowers. I am always open to helping people in any way that I can, so please chat me anytime. Star Labs
I am hoping to help Egypt make better use of its Portable Star Labs. I see so many of them laying around unused, or used as decorations. Mutagenics Research:
I am trying to help characterize the mutagens that are being researched. Specially, I'm trying to determine which gene ranges are swapped from the left and right splints. I won't bore you here with genetics theory, it is all explained much more clearly elsewhere on the wiki. But I would like to make my data available to others that share this interest.
This is my first time doing this, so PLEASE chat me if you think I am doing something wrong. Right now, our guru's of genetics are not playing, so I don't have a good source to verify this with. I welcome all input!!
- I am not sure how the mutagen range rounds.
For example, if a mutagen range is that it will swap a gene at 10%. Given a genome of length 16, 10% along is between gene 1 and 2. Does it pick the closer gene (in that case, gene 2) or is it a floor rounding function? (that would truncate the extra %, and round down to gene 1). Or does it pick randomly between the two genes? Knowing this is important! I am assuming here it picks the closer gene, but further tests might reveal the actual rounding method.
UPDATE July 16th, 2011
After scouring past mutagenic notes, its come to my attention that the previous tales mutagenic experts used the ceiling function as their rounding method. I am not sure why they choose this (whether it was a data driven decision or a guess). However, I have re-evaluated some of our Tale 5 data that seemed inconsistent. Specifically, some tests that yielded non-overlapping ranges, given our range method calculations. Using the ceiling function approach gave consistent data! This may be a mistake, but I am updating all my calculations to the Ceiling Function Rounding method of previous tales.
Ceiling Floor Function: This means that the rounding function will always round UP to the next whole number.
- given a gene target x out of gene length y, the range is:
- minimum range is (x-1)/y x 100%
- maximum range is x/y x 100%
- For example, a mutagen that targets gene 8 out of a possible 27 has minimum range 7/27 x 100% = 25.926% and maximum range of 8/27x100% = 29.629%.
- given a mutagen range, the targeted gene will always be:
- minimum gene is [(minimum range)x(genome length)]/100 rounded up
- maximum gene is [(maximum range)x(genome length)]/100, rounded up
- For example, a mutagen that has range 25.926% to 29.629% targets, on a genome of length 27:
minimum gene is (25.926)x(27)/100 = 7.000002 rounded up to 8 maximum gene is (29.629)x(27)/100 = 7.99983 rounded up to 8.

TEST 1: Nile Green / Nile Green Unmutated Genome:

Right splint had no gene groups broken, but gained an additional gene sequence of RRGY Left splint had the (RO) gene group broken.
Solvents on Left Splint showed:

- YRR <-- that pinpoints it as the third G directly after (GYGYGY) as being replaced with an R

- also reveals that a "G" gene was moved to the left splint

- The phenotype revealed that the (RO) seed gene was mutated.
- The right gene results show that an "R" gene was switched w/ a "G" gene.

- gene targeted was 21/27
- gene range is 20/27 to 21/27 or 74.074% to 77.777%
TEST 2: Fracture / Crown (Ava 43,44)
- phenotypes: Fracture became giant, colors unchanged. Crown petals went from red to magenta
- Left splint: Fracture: K(ROYG)(ROY(G)YOR)GOR(GOOO)K
- Test 1 predicts gene 7 or 8 will be swapped
- if 7, 1st Y in the "ROYGYOR" set is swapped, it should be a 1 giant + 1 dwarf = small size.
- if 8, then G in middle of "ROYGYOR" set is swapped, both sets are broken, and result is 1 giant.
- observed: its a giant. no color changes
- it was gene 8 swapped.
- range predicted now is 38.888% to 44.444%
- this updates the left splint range to: 38.888% to 40.700%
- Right splint: Crown: K(UROO)(UROO)(UROO)VURVOOVURVORV(UROR)(UROR)(UROR)K
- Test 1 predicts that gene 28 or 29 will swap. (O or 2nd R in the first (UROR) set. If so, a yellow gene will be broken.
- observed: the petals are more magenta colored than red. This is consistent w/ above prediction. It could also be a gene before or after this one that moved, and give the same results, so the exact gene position isn't certain w/o solvent testing.
TEST 3: Dusk / Fracture (Ava 72, 73)
- phenotypes: no changes were observed !!
Expected Left: gene 29 or 30. If 30 (GRRO) --> (GRRR)removing Yellow north and adding cyan south If 29 (GRRO) --> GRRO no change at all.
Expected Right--> 14th gene, R from GOR to swap in. GOR is junk, so no phenotype change is expected.
Results: no differences in phenotypes.
- therefore Left splint targeted gene 29. R-->R.
- genomes are the same.
- range from this is: 28/73 to 29/73 or 38.356% to 39.726%
- updated range is: 38.888% to 39.726%
TEST 4: Vampire / Vampire (Bessodia's Test)

Right: (ROYG)(ROY_YOR)GOR(GOO) broke that middle _ gene (was a G). it broke up a giant and a dwarf gene, leaving just 1 giant gene in the genome. can't tell what was swapped in, w/o solvent.
test inconclusive, w/o solvents.
TEST 5: Crown/Clarity (Ava 129. Ava 130)
expected: Crown's gene 27 or 28 ... UROR... (the RO in the middle) expected: Clarity's genes 15, 16, 17. gene 15, 16 are R's in GORR gene 17 is G in GROR
Observed: phenotypes of flowers are the same!! so both splints swapped R's.
Left: gene 27 of 37 was targeted range is 26/37 to 27/37 or 70.270% o 72.975%. this is consistent w/ other tests, but a larger range.
Right Splint: was gene 15 or 16 of 36 total range is 14/36 to 16/36 or 38.888% to 44.444% this is consistent w/ other tests, but a larger range.

Right: predicted either gene 9 or 10 to swap.
- gene 9 would have broken (GOOO)
- Gene 0 is a V. no phenotype change expected.
No phenotype change of blush was seen. Therefore, we know 10th gene V swapped. 10/26 gene targeted range is 9/26 to 10/26 = 34.615% to 38.461% combining with test 1, that gives overlap range of 34.615% to 37.037%.

TEST 2: Clarity / Morning (Ava 69, Ava 70)
Left: this will swap either the 34th or 35th gene in Clarity. Both are R genes.

Right: this will swap either the 27, 28 or 29 gene (of 44) in Morning.
- original genome: ...(UROR)(GRRR)...
if 27th, (UROR) --> (URRR). This will remove Yellow Inner West and add Cyan Inner East. if 28th (UROR) ---> (UROR). No change in genome or phenotype if 29th (GRRR)--> RRRR. this removes cyan from the outer south, and adds nothing.
Observed: Yellow inner west was removed and cyan inner east was added. Right genome:KIRRRIYYYIYYYUYYYUYYY(UROR)(UR(OR)R)GRRRGYYYGORRGRROK
- gene targeted was 27/44.
- gene range is: 26/44 to 27/44 or 60.227% to 62.500%.
- combined with TEST 1's results, Right splint range is now: 59.259% to 61.363%
Left: GRRO gene was indeed broken, removing a yellow and leaving, in total, 1 black and 1 blue color on the Outer North Petals. No further conclusions can be made about which R gene was swapped.
TEST 3: Vampire/vampire (Bessodia's Test) Left genome: IYIYIOIOIOIO. 8th gene 0-->Y range is 58.333% to 66.666% this is wider than already known range.
Right genome: IYIYIOIYIOIY 12th gene Y-->O range is 91.666% - 100% this is wider than already known range.
TEST 4: Crown / Fracture (Ava 125, Ava 126)
expect: gene 35 or 36 in crown (center RO in UROR gene). Fracture just donates an R.
Observed: Left has 1 cyan east and lost 1 yellow west. so gene 36 was swapped .. UROR --> URRR gene 36/37 targeted genome: UROO UROO UROO V URVOOVURVORV UROR UROR URRR
range is 35.5/37 to 36.5/37 or 95.946% to 98.649% combining with other test results, new range is 95.946% to 98.143%
Right: colors are the same, but its a giant x 2!! we know it was an R being swapped out with an O. genome: ROYG ROYGYOO GOR GOOO gene 11/18 was targeted range is 10.5/18 to 11.5/18 or 58.333% to 63.889% This is wider than our current range.
