From the table above you can decide which vines to plant that will suit your goals and needs. Plant extra vineyards together if you want more bottles of wine from vines. Consider that Test of Festivals asks for certain vintages of wine, Body Monuments ask for wines of certain flavors, certain winebooks ask for flavors and certain amounts of alcohol, Test of Vigil asks for certain wines, chemists need high sugar and tannin wines so having more bottles can help others too.
You can immediately Tend after planting but cannot Take a Cutting after planting your vine.

Planting
Starting values for all stats for a vine when first planted are 0 except for Grapes and Vigor. Grapes starting value is between 8 and 12 (inclusive and regardless of how many Grapes gene sets a vine genome has) and is 'assigned' randomly for a unique vine genome. You might also think of it as each type of vine is 'assigned' an amount of starting Grapes and every cutting from that vine will ALWAYS have that amount of starting Grapes. Vigor begins with 100 health and will always decrease with each tend.
Tending
Building your personal Tend Table - Example is high Quality on Contemplation vine
Refer to the tending table links in the above chart and print them out. Use Printable Version under Toolbox on the left side bar. You may have to do Print Preview to have All Pages print out. Also printout Abbreviation Key to Tend Tables.
WARNING: DO NOT LET VIGOR GO TO ZERO OR A NEGATIVE VALUE or your vine will die.
Possible Vineyard States:
- SA - The vines are SAGGING a Bit.
- W - Leaves are WILTING.
- M - A MUSTY smell can be detected.
- F - Stems look especially FAT.
- R - Leaves RUSTLE in the breeze.
- SV - The grapes are starting to ShriVel.
- SM - Leaves ShiMmer with moisture.
Tending Methods:
- AS - AERATE the SOIL.
- MG - MIST the GRAPES.
- PO - PINCH OFF the weakest stems.
- SL - SHADE the LEAVES.
- SV - SPREAD out the VINES.
- TV - TIE the VINES to the trellis.
- TL - TRIM the lower LEAVES.
First, take out the tending table for the vine you are working with. Let's say you decide on Contemplation to have higher quality for seeing flavors. You will now make your personal tend table for Contemplation for this specific goal.
The Tending Tables list tables for each of the States you will see when you go to the vineyard and click on it. The next decision is which tend to choose to end up maximizing your goal. We always want to look at the Grapes column and maximize grape count in tandem with your other goals. We always want to look at the Vigor column and minimize the decreasing. Vigor always decreases from 100 down to zero or close to it and is the main determiner of when to harvest. Otherwise the vine would die because Vigor goes negative. In this example Quality is also a goal so we will be looking at the Grapes, Quality and Vigor columns to build our personal tend table.
The first State we look at is SAGGING. We will list tends for the Sagging state that have positive values in both Grapes and Quality columns:

Notice that TL is also included because Sagging happens to be a sucky tend. TL will probably get chosen because Vigor value loss is minimized and Grape loss is zero while Quality has a minimum loss of -1. Or you might decide to use SV to get more grapes and take a middle of the road Vigor loss while thinking that you are maximizing Quality in the other tends enough to take a -7 Quality loss on this one tend. In the end, TL is chosen to minimize all decreases.
Next we will look at the other States and decide which Tend would be the best for each State we might currently find on our vineyards.
WILTING

SV and TV have too high a decrease in Vigor. SL has too high a decrease in Quality. So the choice will be between MG if you want to go for more grapes or TL if you want to lose some grapes but gain a little in Quality and neither takes much loss in Vigor. We will try TL to bump the Quality up.
MUSTY

All three of the above take a serious decrease to Vigor of -13 so choose the best one for both Grapes and Quality to make it worth it which is MG.

It's tempting to use the TV tend because both have high positives, but the very high decrease in Vigor makes the ratio not worth it. Remember it's easier to plant more vineyards to get more grapes than it is to raise Quality. So we will choose the SV tend if the State is Shrivel.

The ratio for Quality vs Vigor is higher with AS.
So there we have a personal choice set of tends to maximize grapes on the low grape vine Contemplation while raising Quality as much as possible and getting the most tends possible before Vigor gets to its minimum and we must Harvest.

The Actual Tending
You can click on your vineyard and choose a TEND selection ONCE AN HOUR and TAKE A CUTTING ONCE EVERY 2 HOURS.
Step 1) Click the vineyard and Take a Cutting for future use if you want.
Step 2) CHECK VIGOR to make sure the tend you choose WILL NOT go to zero or negative or the vine will die!
Step 3) Look at the State it is in at the top of the window under This is a Vineyard, Growing WhateverVine.
Step 4) Look at your personal tend table and find the current State on the window, RECHECK THIS CURRENT VINE'S VIGOR against the Vigor loss of the tend for the State you see, and choose the tend from your table.
See below if the Vigor for your current vine is at it's lowest point without going to zero or negative.
Harvesting Your Grapes
Two reasons to harvest.
- When Vigor is at it's lowest point without going to zero or below.
- The end of the vintage.
It is a good idea if you have more than one vineyard at a spot to wait and harvest all the grapes at the same coords at the same time so you can barrel all of them together. Otherwise you end up using more wine barrels and having more left over grapes.
IMPORTANT STEP: Get your notebook or your wiki page and catalogue the coords of your vines.
Harvesting
- Click the vineyard and choose Harvest the Grapes.
- Look in your Items. Those harvested grapes will be labeled Avatar#nnn.
- Write that down beside the vine coords. Or use a chat and catalogue the grape # and vine coords temporarily until you put them in the barrel and label the wine.
Barreling the Grapes
Points to remember.
- Each bottle uses 21 grapes.
- Keep same flavor grapes together in one barrel.
- You might think about planting more vineyards at a favored flavor spot to have more bottles for that vintage.
- You can mix leftover grapes (the remainders from multiples of 21) in one barrel to have a variety of flavors in one bottle. The mystery wines!
WARNING: GRAPES CAN GO BAD after 24 egypt hours in your Items or storage or an open barrel. WARNING: HAVE THE BARREL TAPS IN ITEMS or you will not be able to Crush the grapes.
Barreling.
- Put multiples of 21 of the same area of flavor coords (if wanted) or a mix of particular flavor areas. For example if a winebook calls for Tobacco and Walnut you can specifically mix grapes from those flavor areas. You can get more winebook points for Samplings, amounts of Alcohol, Sweet wines, etc if the bottle has different flavors you have not tasted before.
- Mix up the leftovers into the other barrels however you would like.
- Crush the Grapes.
- A popup asks for the name. Things to put in the name.
- Your signature name. We use Pascarella, a combo of Pascalito and Ariella. Sometimes we use Garden of Eden.
- Type names like Tutti Fruiti can be whimsical names perhaps in other languages too or maybe something to match the color of the wine or dryness once you know.
- Reason for wine which might be Flavor Test, Sugar, Alcohol Target (you don't know the alcohol content until after Siphoning), Flavor (that you know after you've tested), etc
You may later relabel your wine, but a cost of Label papers made from 1 Papyrus Paper (made on a Paper Press) and 1 Ink (made in a Chemistry Lab) and 1 Quill (made from an Ibis feather).
Siphoning
You probably want to Siphon right away to see the beginning stats.
You can see:
- Alcohol
- Residual Sugar
- Tannin
- Acid
Alcohol - If your target is a 12% wine LET IT GO TO 12.1% because we do not know if the number is rounded or truncated and you could end up with as low as 11.95% instead of 12%.
Bottling Your Prized Wines
- Note: Bottle before end of month/season to have bottles of wine for each vintage.
When you bottle the wine from a barrel you must bottle all of them, not just one or a few.
WARNING: Siphon just before you bottle to get the ending stats! Record those beside the vineyard coords you have recorded. You will want to know what alcohol level a certain wine has for winebook requirements, Test of Festival requirements and using for spirits later as an example.
When wanting to know the flavor of a new vineyard you might want to barrel a few grapes (multiples of 21) and then immediately bottle to taste. This is called 'insta-bottling'.
Choose "Open the Barrel and Bottle the Wine". It will tell you if your Items does not contain enough Empty Wine Bottles.
Knowing Flavors
Particular flavors are needed in the Winebooks and for Test of Festivals.
The quickest way to know the young flavors of a vineyard spot is to plant the vine, do one tend for maximum grapes(two vines next to each other is good for this purpose so that you have 21 grapes to make one bottle of wine) , harvest, put multiples of 21 grapes in the wine barrel (labeling as: Flavor Test <coords of vineyard/s>) and instantly bottle (commonly called instabottling). Serve at the Tasting Table.
With a little more patience, keep tending to maximize grapes until just before the change of vintage which is just before the next Egyptian month. KEEP IN MIND YOU MUST BOTTLE BEFORE THE CHANGE OF VINTAGE/EGYPTIAN MONTH, NOT JUST HARVEST OR PUT IN BARREL ONLY. This way you have more bottles for future tests. Since more flavors develop with later vintages (each vintage has a 'potential' of adding zero or more flavor/s), serving a bottle right after the vintage/Egyptian month you bottled in will reveal the flavors of two vintages.
After that, open a bottle each vintage or two to see if any new flavors have appeared.
Remember that flavors will be more specific when tasted 1) by someone with a higher palate and 2) out of a higher quality glass. For instance, a flavor could show up simply as 'woodiness' out of a lower quality glass, but may read as 'Oak' or 'Cedar' out of a higher quality glass.
With the above in mind, you can see that having multiple vineyards at each potential flavor spot is advantageous to be able to have plenty of bottles to test. But this 'juice' bottling technique produces bottles of wine that go bad quicker than better quality wine. 'Going bad' means getting nasty flavors such as 'Mousey Smells', 'Hydrogen Sulfide', 'Horsey Smells', etc. Some flavors take many vintages to appear.
The theory is that when such messages as 'Overwhelming' are shown at the taste testing that certain flavors that are appearing may have 'overwhelmed' or hidden some other flavors.
To make bottled wine that will last the length of the tale, leave the juice in the barrels to develop higher alcohol and have good quality grapes. Quality can be heightened in two ways...by tending to maximize the Quality stat and by having vines with 1 or more Quality gene sets.
Placing the Glassware
When you click on the Ceremonial Tasting Table:

The center glass should be your highest quality, ultimately a 9k+ wine glass. A common arrangement is to have a decrease in glass quality from center, Glass 1, to Glass 4 on one end and then from Glass 7 continue the decrease in quality out to the end glass or Glass 5. You might want to keep Glass 5 as a Table Glass (the glass that appeared on the table) which is Quality 0, of course. An example of glass quality arrangement might be Glass 1 9k+, Glass 2 8k, Glass 3 6.5k, Glass 4 5k, Glass 5 Table Glass or Quality 0, Glass 6 2.4k, Glass 7 4.1k. But how you place them is up to you. REMEMBER THIS WHEN YOU DRINK AT SOMEONE ELSE'S TABLE. We will explain in How to Drink for Maximum Points.
How to Drink for Maximum Points
- Note: Record the flavors next to your vineyard coords and ending siphon stats!
If the wine is thin, then drink only from one glass. You will see no flavors, but if it is a high alcohol wine you can get a point for that or perhaps a Sampling point.
Glasses show flavor tiers. The highest quality glass, usually a 9k+ or 8k+ quality will show the most detailed of the three flavor tiers. The lowest quality will show the least detailed or most general of the three flavor tiers. The middle quality glasses will show the middle tier. You can gain different points from glasses that show the different flavor tiers. If you have more than one flavor, those flavors can 'show' in different levels of tiers within the same glass depending on the glass quality. An example is below of possible 'showings'.
One flavor in its three tiers:
- Lemon - Highest tier or most detailed
- Citrus Notes - Middle tier
- Fruit - Lowest tier or most general
Another flavor in its three tiers:
- Menthol - Highest tier or most detailed
- Coolness - Middle tier
- Pungency - Lowest tier or most general
Let's say you have a wine that has both flavors. The following could 'show' in different qualities of wine glasses. This is only an example.
- 9k+ glass - Lemon and Menthol
- 8k glass - Lemon and Coolness
- 7k glass - Citrus Notes and Coolness
- 5k glass - Citrus Notes and Pungency
- Table Glass, Quality 0 - Fruit and Pungency
You could gain a point from each flavor combination of tiers for each of the different winebook categories such as Samplings, 12%+ alchohol, Sweetness, Vintage, etc. In other words, from the flavor combos above, it is possible to gain 5 different points for Samplings, 5 different points for 12%+ alcohol, and so on. So LOOK AT THE GLASS QUALITIES of a table you are not familiar with to gain the maximum points and don't just guzzle away!
